Zach Zenner is a professional American football player who plays in the running back position for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). Before turning pro, Zenner played college football with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits football team where he made history as the first player in Division I history to have 3 straight 2,000-yard rushing seasons.

Zach Zenner Bio, Age

On September 13, 1991, Zachary Zenner was born in Eagan, Minnesota to Paul and Carol Zenner. He had his high school education at Eagan High School where he was a letterman in football as well as baseball.

Playing in the running back position, Zach Zenner posted an average of 8.9 yards per carry, along with 1,181 rushing yards, 122 receiving yards and 17 total touchdowns in his high school senior year (2009). For his outstanding performance, the talented youngster was one of the finalists for the Minnesota Mr. Football Award. Zenner equally received All-Metro and Academic All-State honors.

By the end of his high school career, Zach Zenner received a scholarship from just one school in the NCAA Division I, the South Dakota State University and expectedly he settled for the school’s football program. He redshirted his freshman year (2010) and joined the team in 2011. After his redshirt freshman season (2011), Zenner eventually had his breakout year in the 2012 season. He maintained his top form throughout the rest of his college career as he recorded over 2,000 rushing yards from 2012 to 2014.

NFL Career

By the end of his collegiate career, Zach was projected as a 5th or 6th round pick, however, he went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft. As an undrafted free agent, he eventually landed a three-year contract with the Detroit Lions. Zenner had an impressive run during the 2015 pre-season leading the NFL in rushing yards. He entered the 2015 season as the 4th backup running back on the Lions’ team.

On September 13, 2015, in the Detroit Lions’ first game of the season opposite the San Diego Chargers, Zach Zenner made his NFL debut recording 2 carries for 6 rushing yards. He earned his first career start on October 11, 2015, in the Lions’ game against the Arizona Cardinals finishing with a season-high 10 carries for 30 rushing yards. Unfortunately, Zenner’s rookie season was brought to an abrupt halt following a chest injury incurred during the team’s game against the Chicago Bears on October 18.

For the 2016 season, Zach Zenner remained fourth on the Lions’ depth chart behind Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick, and rookie Dwayne Washington. He earned his first start of the season in the team’s October 16 game against the Los Angeles Rams, finishing with a new career-best 14 carries for 58 rushing yards and 2 caught passes for 14 receiving yards. He finished the season with an average of 3.8 yards per carry, 88 carries for 334 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns, 18 caught passes for 196 receiving yards.

Zach Zenner’s playing time was further reduced in the 2017 season as he appeared in only 8 games. He finished the season with an average 1.9 yards per carry, 14 rushing attempts for 26 rushing yards and one touchdown. However, the talented running back had his contract with the Detroit Lions renewed on March 16, 2018.

Family- Siblings

Zach Zenner is the first of his parents’ 4 children. He was raised alongside 3 siblings, brother Sam and sisters Abby and Emily. Though none of his parents was a college athlete, there seem to be a lot of sports genes in the family. Between 2013 and 2016, his sister Abby Zenner was on the South Dakota State University (SDSU) women’s swimming and diving team. His brother Sam Zenner also gained a sports scholarship to SDSU in 2015 where he ran track.

Zach Zenner is currently married to his longtime friend and high school sweetheart Alyssa Zenner (née Seipel). The couple met as teenagers in Eagan High School and have remained inseparable ever since. They tied the knot on March 5, 2016, in Eagan, Minnesota. The couple welcomed their first child on February 20, 2018, a son named Zayne Zenner.

Alyssa Zenner is a physical and health educator and also a certified water safety instructor. In 2014, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Winona State University with a major in Health Promotion and Physical Education.
