Anand (1971)

This movie was a huge success domestically. Since its release, it has recorded a score of Rs 132.61 at the domestic box office. It also had a lot of audience approval as evident in its 93% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.8 stars rating on IMDb.

Chukpe Chukpe (1975)

This comedy themed drama was released in 1975. Chukpe Chukpe is a critically acclaimed movie widely accepted and approved by its audience. It features stars such as Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Usha Kiran, David Abraham Cheulkar and so on who worked collaboratively with Amitabh Bachchan to produce this masterpiece.

The story revolves around the jealousy of a botany professor who plays a trick on his brother-in-law who his wife admires. Impersonating his driver, the professor ushers a series of hilarious acts and events characterized by misunderstandings. This hilarious film will leave your ribs cracking anytime. It was produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and N.C. Sippy. The screenplay writing was put together by popular Indian scriptwriters.

Although it has no rating records on Rotten Tomatoes, it has an impressive 8.4-star rating on IMDb. It was also a commercial success with high-income earnings.

Deewar (1975)

Also referred to as Wall or I’ll Die For Mama, Deewar is a 1975 Indian action film known for its commercial and critical success. Its cast includes some of Bollywood’s finest such as Shashi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi and certainly Amitabh Bachchan. Together, they deliver this drama in the best way possible.

The film centers on the lives of two brothers who grew up in a poor family and struggled to make headway in life despite their background as they eventually find themselves on different sides of the law. While one becomes a law enforcer, the other becomes a law breaker or criminal. The movie is set in 1970, revealing the unsteady socio-political conditions in India at that time.

It was produced and directed by Gulshan Rai and Yash Chopra respectively and was scripted through a joint effort of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. A commercial success with a domestic box office score of 168, it was also statistically a masterstroke with ratings as high as 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.1 stars out of the optimal of 10.

Sholay (1975)

When talking about some Amitabh Bachchan’s best movies, it is highly unlikely for the name Sholay not to pop up. This is largely because of its audience approval rate as well as market commercial prowess. This 1975 movie also casted the likes of Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, and Jaya Bhaduri.

This story is centered on crime in the village of Ramgarh, caused by a notorious bandit who Thakur Baldev Singh, a retired policeman intends to eradicate and in so doing enlists the assistance of two lesser criminals. The movie was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar while it was directed by Ramesh Sippy.

It made over 350 million INR in India. What a success you would agree. On ratings, it also did well with 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.2 stars on IMDb.

Don (1978)

Regarded as one of the most successful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, this film – directed by Chandra Barot – makes its way to this list. This crime narrative is a must-watch for everyone as it features the finest of the finest in Bollywood such as Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Pran, Iftekhar, Helen, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappu and Pinchoo Kapoor.

The movie revolves around efforts to take down a drug mafia gang. The leader is impersonated by his look-alike after he is killed in a police chase. The purpose of this mission is to infiltrate and obliterate. The impersonator soon finds himself and the only person who knows his true identity in grave danger. Amitabh plays the role of Vijay and Don – the impersonator and the mafia lord. The movie was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar and released in 1978.

The movie was considered a great success with a box office score of 70 million INR. It also had favorable ratings on IMDb with 7.8 stars to show for it.

Jaadugar (1989)

Described as one of Amitabh’s poor role choices, this movie recorded low commercial viability as well as audience approval. Although Jaadugar had famous and renown Indian stars like Jaya Prada, Aditya Pancholi, Amrita Singh, Amrish Puri, Pran, and Amitabh Bachchan the movie failed to live up to expectations.

This 1989 fantasy movie is centered around magic. A man finds out that his father is posing as a magician in a small village and decided to employ the services of a real magician to challenge his father. The man’s intent was to displace his father, which he did successfully but unfortunately putting another power-hungry magician in a powerful position. Amitabh Bachchan aptly delivers the role of Goga, the power-driven magician.

The movie had poor ratings. Although it couldn’t be found on Rotten Tomatoes, it was rated on 4-star on IMDb. Accurate statistical information about its box office scores are not known, however, research shows that it didn’t do so well in the market either.

Insaniyat (1994)

This is also one movie regarded as the “dark” choices among Amitabh Bachchan movies. Critics wonder his reason for accepting this role while the audience had doubt about his capabilities.

Insaniyat is a crime movie that involves the discovery of a corrupt police officer by an honest one, Inspector Amar (Amitabh Bachchan). Unraveling that many of the men in the police force have also been corrupted, he seeks to put an end to Brijbhan, the police officer responsible for terrorism in India. He does this with the help of two estranged gang leaders.

Despite its poor reviews and audience reception, Insaniyat was able to make a box office record of 60 million INR domestically and 120 million INR worldwide. However, it received an awful rating of 3.1 stars on IMDb while it had no records on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mrityudaata (1997)

Interpreted as Angel of Death, Mrityudaata was one of the poorly rated movies Amitabh Bachchan was part of. This movie has been referred to as his comeback movie after taking a break in 1992. Unfortunately, it was a pitiable comeback. Like Tere Mere Sapne, which was produced by his production company, this movie was a commercial and critical debacle.

The movie was centered on the twists and turns that occur in the life of Dr. Ram (Amitabh Bachchan) culminating in the death of his beloved wife and brother. This leads him to avenge their death thereby taking the name, Mrityudaata. This movie was directed by Mehul Kumar and released in 1997.

Commercially, it realized 17 million INR. This was considered extremely poor considering the investment of 13 million INR. On IMDb, it received an abysmal 2.6-star rating. Its scores were not found on Rotten Tomatoes.

Boom (2003)

With all the stars in this movie, not to talk of how gorgeous some are, one would think it will capture the audience’s attention and love. Sadly, it didn’t, instead, the film was a complete flop which dragged the name and reputation of Amitabh Bachchan to the mud – at least, for a while.

The movie was released in 2003 and was produced and directed by Ayesha Shroff and Kaizad Gustad respectively. It featured the likes of Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Padma Lakshmi, Madhu Sapre and Zeenat Aman. The story picks up from a fashion perspective but later fuses crime and violence. It is centered on the troubles of three of India’s top model who three gangsters blame for the loss of their stolen diamonds and demands a refund.

The movie was a huge flop on the box office chart with only 12 million INR realized on a worldwide scale. It also had poor ratings as seen in its 2.3-star rating on IMDb.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007)

In Amitabh Bachchan’s acting career, this is regarded as the worst movie he had ever featured in. The movie, which was a remake of one of the most successful films in Bollywood history ended up being a complete disaster. Even with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgn, Prashant Raj Sachdev, Sushmita Sen, the movie was still a complete failure.

Its story revolves around a group of bodyguards who work for a politician but had their positions jeopardized by a scandal the politician is involved in. They move to Mumbai to find greener pastures but are faced with a threat from the police.

It had a deplorable rating. Its poor audience voting results led to a 1.8-star rating on IMDb. It also experienced a catastrophic failure commercially with a box office domestic collection of 1.5 million INR.
