Diana Dors was a British singer and actress who was often compared to renowned American actress/singer/model one of the most popular sex symbols of her time. An icon in her own right, Dors was well-loved for her quick wit, acting talent, and natural flair for the spotlight.
While her stint in the show business lasted, the actress displayed her genuine talent on several chat-shows as a guest on cabarets and television. She also did so many recordings that were highly-appreciated by critics. Diana Dors’ Bio
On the 23rd of October in the year 1931, Diana Dors was born to her mother Winifred Maud Mary who at the time, did not know if her husband Albert Edward Sidney Fluck was responsible for the pregnancy. This was especially because she was having an affair at the time with an undisclosed man who she felt could equally be her father. The actress, whose original name is Diana Mary Fluck is British by reason of her birth at the Haven Nursing Home, in Swindon, Wiltshire, England, in the United Kingdom.
The actress studied at Colville House and later at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) after excelling in her elocution studies. She joined LAMDA at the age of 14 (although people say she was older), becoming the institution’s youngest student ever. One of her favorite moments at the time was visiting the cinema where she took to Hollywood actresses Jean Harlow, Lana Turner, and Veronica Lake as her heroines.
Career
After working with LAMDA on a number of theatrical productions, Diana Dors scored her first screen role in the 1947 noir film The Shop at Sly Corner which earned her £8 per day for three days. It was while she was signing for this contract that she changed her surname to Dors as consented by her father. According to records, Dors is the maiden name of Diana’s maternal grandmother.
Her next project was Dancing with Crime (1947), wherein she starred alongside Barry K. Barnes, Richard Attenborough, and Sheila Simshot, for which she received £10 daily for 15 days. Diana Dors eventually graduated from LAMDA in the same year with the London Films Cup award. She joined the Rank Organization, an entertainment agency at the age of 16 and starred in many other films until 1949 when she was promoted to a leading role in the film, Diamond City.
The British star also took in part some comedic projects such as Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary? (1953), The Saint’s Return (1954), Value for Money (1955) It’s a Grand Life (1953), An Alligator Named Daisy, as well as Miss Tulip Stays the Night (1955).
As a result of her impressive projects in the industry, Diana won the attention of Hollywood and did a slew of productions with them under the entertainment studio, RKO. She left New York after RKO severed their ties with her, however, sometime in 1960, the actress undertook a cabaret contract that necessitated her to return to Hollywood. She starred in several films and by the mid-seventies, Diana Dors was already in high demand for sex comedies. A Man With a Maid (1975), Adventures of a Private Eye (1977), Three for All (1976) were some of the sex comedy films she appeared in while Dick Turpin (1981), Cannon and Ball (1981), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1980), and Timon of Athens (1981) were her final projects. Dors waved filming goodbye in the year 1985 after starring in the British film, Steaming.
As a singer, Diana Dors recorded some studio albums and singles, after which she turned to adult sex parties that meteorically revived her popularity. She made her last public appearance on the 15th day of April 1984 in cabaret at Harpoon Louie’s, Earls Court, West London, looking considerably frail.
Spouse And Kids
Diana Dors got married to thrice in her lifetime. Her first attempt at marriage was with Dennis Hamilton Gittins. They were husband and wife from 3rd July 1951 when they tied the knot to 3rd January 1959 when Gittins died. The two didn’t give birth to any children.
Dors’ second marriage was to in New York. They tied the knot on 12th April 1959 and were together until seven years later when they got divorced in 1966. They had two sons named Gary Dawson and Mark Dawson.
Alan Lake was the last man Diana said “I Do” to on 23rd November 1968. He remained her husband until her death on the 4th of 1984. The pair had one son named Jason Lake.
Death
Diana Dors died at the AMI Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor due to a recurrence of ovarian cancer. She was rushed to the hospital after she collapsed in her home near Windsor. Prior to her death, the actress cum singer twice underwent surgery to eliminate cancerous tumors and also had meningitis.
Diana was laid to rest at the Sunningdale Catholic Cemetery after a funeral service was held in her honor on 11th May 1984, at the Sacred Heart Church in Sunningdale.
