The Virginia native, who has since become legitimate in his businesses dealings, is now one of the most reputable rappers in the industry who never shies away from butting heads with others, as he has famously beefed with people like and .
Biography
On the 13th of May, 1977, in the New York City borough of The Bronx, Pusha T, whose birth name is Terrence LeVarr Thornton, was born. After his birth, the Thornton family relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where they raised him and his older brother and future collaborator, Gene Thornton who is better known by his stage name, No Malice.
In his teenage years, Pusha T joined his older brother selling drugs to make extra money. When their parents found out what was going on, they kicked Gene out of the house because he reportedly took all the blame and shielded his brother. In 1992, the two brothers decided to try their hands on making hip hop music, which led them to form the two-man group, Clipse. They were making a name for themselves in the Virginia hip hop scene, which got them an audience with fellow Virginia native, , who developed a liking to their lyrical content. He went on to help them secure a record deal with Elektra Records in 1996 through which they released their debut single, “The Funeral”. The single created very little buzz and was commercially unsuccessful, prompting the label to drop the duo.
Despite the disappointment, Pusha T had become well known in the music industry and was able to land numerous features songs by other mainstream artists. By 2001, Pharrell Williams, who had established a good working relationship with Clipse, signed them to his recently established Star Trak music label through which they went on to release their debut album, Lord Willin’ (2002). The brothers went on to release two more albums; Hell Hath No Fury (2006) and Til the Casket Drops (2009) before they decided to work on individual projects as Pusha T himself got signed to ‘s record label, GOOD Music.
Following a number of appearances on songs by Kanye and other mainstream rappers, Pusha T released his first solo work, a mixtape titled Fear of God in March 2011. He followed it up with an extended play (EP) titled Fear of God II: Let Us Pray that came a few months later in July, 2011. Two years later, in October 2013, Pusha T released his debut album, My Name Is My Name to universal critical acclaim. He has since released two more albums, King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude in 2015 and
Daytona in 2018.
