Born Andrew Sebastian Benintendi on July 6, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the baller is the oldest of the three children of his parents and has two sisters; Olivia and Lily. His parents are Chris, an attorney and Jill, a homemaker. His paternal grandparents Robert, an OB-GYN and Sally emigrated to the United States from Sicily.

As a child, his athletic aptitude was evident. He danced, dabbled in soccer and golf as well as thrived in basketball and baseball. That wasn’t surprising though as he is an offshoot of high school and varsity athletes. His father played baseball while his mother sweated it out on the hardwood.

Andrew Benintendi attended Madeira High School in Madeira, Ohio where he posted records that were not only better than those of other athletes but were also unbeatable. He was on both the baseball and basketball teams. As a four-year varsity starter in hoops, he smashed records and remains Madeira High’s all-time leading scorer by 1,753 career points, the leader in three-pointers (180), points per game in a season (25.5) as well as in steals and free throws. Moreover, he was the 2011-12 Cincinnati Enquirer Division III co-Player of the Year in his junior year.

In baseball, he also holds Madeira’s single-season and career records for at-bats, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, and stolen bases, in addition to the school’s single-season batting average and RBI titles he wields. With an Ohio-record 199 career runs scored, he batted .564 with 57 runs batted in (RBIs), 12 homers and 38 stolen bases racked up in his senior year. Subsequently, the accolades rolled in as did the attention. Among them are the ABCA/Rawlings National High School Player of the Year and Ohio Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.

Though he starred on both arenas, Benintendi decided to focus on baseball having realized that at 5-foot-10, he didn’t quite have the stature to go as far on the court as he did on the diamond. He was drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round of 2013 MLB draft but his mind was stayed on attending the University of Arkansas and he wasn’t about giving that up. Thus, he did not sign with the Reds but enrolled to play college baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team.

He started all but one of the games he appeared in as a true freshman and hit .276 with 45 runs, one home run, and 27 RBI. Although the stats didn’t measure up for someone who had been on a different trajectory in his senior year, and his first injury and surgery just before arriving at Arkansas might have contributed, he immediately took to improve his form and play. He hit the gym during the summer and it did pay tremendous dividends for him as far as his ability to hit the ball harder.

In his sophomore year, he led the Southeastern Conference in batting average (.380), homers (19), on-base percentage (.489), slugging percentage (.715), and walks (47).

He was also named the SEC Player of the Year, earned the National Player of the Year award from Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, as well as the Dick Howser Trophy and USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award. Furthermore, he was considered one of the top prospects for the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. Despite these awards, he had his eyes set on his ultimate goal – to play in the major leagues. And it wasn’t long before he did.

MLB Career and Salary

Andrew Benintendi was selected by the Boston Red Sox as the 7th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 draft. After inking the contract that made him a pro player on June 30, 2015, with a $3.6 million signing bonus, he made his debut three days later for the Short-Season A Lowell Spinners. He split the rest of the season between Lowell and Boston’s Low-A Greenville Drive before starting 2016 with High-A Salem.

In time, he made it to the Double-A level faster than any Boston prospect since in 2005. He was promoted to Double-A Portland Sea Dogs of the Class AA Eastern League on May 15, 2016, after compiling a .341/.413/.563 slash line in 34 games with Salem.

With the Sea Dogs, Benintendi also made another major career decision by moving from center field to left field. On August 2, 2016, the Red Sox organisation proved their belief in the young baller by sending him from Double-A straight to the big leagues. He made his debut the same day, only 421 days after his selection. The next day, he recorded his first major league hit while both his first major league triple and homer came on August 21 against the Detroit Tigers in a 10–5 loss. He finished the season with a .295 batting average, 31 hits, 14 RBIs, two home runs, and one steal in 34 games played.

In 2017, Andrew Benintendi started the season as part of the Red Sox’ Opening Day roster. He finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting behind who won unanimously. At the end of the regular season, he compiled .271 batting average with 20 homers and 90 RBIs in 151 games played.

Through the first half of the 2018 season, Andrew was the team’s regular left fielder and usually batted second, behind . His final outs in the 2018 MLB playoffs sealed victories for the Red Sox in Games 4 and 5 of the 2018 AL Championship Series.

He plays for an annual salary of $620,000. So far in the game, Andrew Benintendi has been more than impressive and expectedly, would climb the Major League ladder in the coming years.
