Nikki Reed’s Biography

Nikki was born Nicole Houston Reed on the 17th of May 1988, in West Los Angeles, California to Seth Reed and Cheryl Houston. Her mom worked as a beautician while her father worked as a production designer.

Reed’s parents divorced when she was just two years old, after which she would be raised by her mom, Cheryl, in Culver City, California. She has two brothers, an older brother named Nathan August Reed and a younger half-brother named Joey Reed whom her father had with another woman.

Reed grew up in complicated situations as a result of her parents’ divorce. At the age of 14, the tragedies that ensued in her home forced her to move out and begin living alone in Los Angeles. When her troubles got to its peak, Reed began sharing it with Catherine Hardwicke, her mother’s friend who would later have a brief relationship with her father.

While spending time with Catherine Hardwicke, Nikki Reed expressed her interest to become an actress and together they collaborated on the teen drama, Thirteen. The film was loosely based on Reed’s own personal experience from the ages of 12 to 13. The two completed the screenplay for the film in 6 days and with hand-held cameras and independently raised funds they began shooting the film.

Due to difficulties finding young actresses to play roles in the film, Nikki was asked to play one of the parts as Evie Zamora one of the most popular girls in school who would come to introduce the naive Tracy Freeland played by Evan Rachel Wood into her world of substance abuse and sex. The film was a huge critical success earning the actresses Oscars and Golden Globe nominations.

While Nikki won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance, Catherine Hardwicke won a handful of awards including the Sundance Film Festival Dramatic Directing Award. It was a big break for both as they would go on to collaborate on future projects.

Nikki Reed attended Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles, from which she dropped out. However, after the success of Thirteen, she returned to the school but would drop out yet again after parents confronted and harassed her about the film. Reed would come to earn her high school diploma through homeschooling.

She became something of a typecast portraying sexy bad girls, thanks to Thirteen. However, as years passed, her versatility became apparent for all to see. Her next major break, the role of Rosalie Hale in Twilight would be another collaboration with Catherine Hardwicke who served as the film’s director. Though Hardwicke won the Young Hollywood Award for her directing she wouldn’t direct the subsequent sequels that would follow, on the other hand, Reed reprised her role in all of the sequels.

Reed’s other film credits would come to include; Last Day of Summer of which she is the executive producer, Catch .44, Empire State, About Scout and more. She played the recurring part of Betsy Ross in the Fox supernatural drama, Sleepy Hollow. Nikki took an unofficial break from acting in 2016 and became more involved in other personal endeavors including for her line of bridal collection.
