Biography
Alfredo James Pacino was born in East Harlem, New York City on the 25th of April, 1940, to Italian American parents, Salvatore and Rose Pacino. Sadly, his parents got divorced when he was two years old. His mother took him to The Bronx to live with his grandparents who were immigrants from Corleone, Sicily. A location that would later define Al Pacino’s life.
Al Pacino who had a passion for acting gained admission to the High School of Performing arts after an audition. He tried paying for his acting studies by taking jobs as a messenger, busboy or janitor but eventually had to drop out. He, however, continued pursuing his acting career by appearing in basement plays in New York’s theatrical underground. The actor then joined the Herbert Berghof Studio (HB Studio) where he met acting teacher, Charlie Laughton.
In 1962, his mother died at the age of 43 and the following year, his grandfather Gerardi, also died. Al Pacino has said that this was the lowest point of his life, losing of the two most influential people in his life.
Al Pacino’s Career
After four years at HB Studio, Al Pacino successfully auditioned for the Actors Studio, a well known and respected membership organization of professional actors, theatre directors, and playwrights in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. It was at Actors Studio that he studied ‘method acting’ under acclaimed acting coach, Lee Strasberg whom he credits alongside Charlie Laughton for helping him launch his career. In 2010, he became co-president of the Actors Studio.
Al Pacino’s foray into acting as a paying career started on stage in 1967 at the Charles Playhouse in Boston, performing in Clifford Odet’s Awake and Sing. He further acted in various plays, making his Broadway debut in 1969 with Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? The talented actor received excellent reviews and even won the Tony Award on April 20, 1969. He won a second Tony for his performance in The Basic Training of PavloHummel. His love of the theatre continues till now; he recently starred on Broadway in China Doll in October 2015.
The talented actor made his film debut with a brief appearance in Me, Natalie. His performances in theatre gained him the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola, who despite protest and shock from studio executives, selected Pacino to play Michael Corleone in what would become the blockbuster and iconic film, The Godfather. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Al Pacino would go on to be further nominated for his performances in Serpico and the sequel of The Godfather. He continued to enjoy success with his work in various movies down the years, growing in popularity and stardom. His movie career sadly took a dip in the early 80s but his performance in Scarface (1983) proved to be a career highlight and a defining role.
The New York native would finally win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of blind US Army Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. In the year 2001, he received the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures.
