They both lived in succession of trailer parks while her mother worked in a bar. Wilson further dropped out of school in ninth grade to focus on her music career.

After a few years, she moved to Nashville where she continued singing and working in a club in order to pay her bills for about four years. She joined an informal band group called Muzik Mafia. There, she met John Rich with whom she wrote her debut single titled Redneck Woman subsequently.

Wilson auditioned for Epic Records Nashville in 2003 and was later signed to the label. While she there, she released her debut single titled Redneck Woman at the beginning of 2004. The song received commercial success, topping the Hot Country Song charts and reaching No 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the instant success of Redneck Woman, Wilson launched her first music album titled Here for the Party in the same year. The album sold over five million copies; thus earning Wilson a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, CMA Horizon Award, ACM Top New Artist, and ACM Top Female Vocalist Award.
The following year, Wilson released another hit album titled All Jacked Up which reached No 1 on the Billboard 200 music chart and sold over one million copies in the United States alone. The album also received wide popularity and was nominated for several Grammys. After that, Gretchen Wilson continued to pull the strides in the American music industry. She has released other hit singles and albums such as One of the Boys in 2007, I Got Your Country Right Here in 2010; Right on Time, Under the Covers, and Christmas in My heart in 2013, and Ready to Get Rowdy in 2017. On August 21, 2018, Gretchen Wilson was arrested at the Bradley International Airport in Windsor. The Redneck Woman star was traveling from Washington D.C. to Connecticut. According to reports, her arrest was as a result of causing a disturbance on the flight. Wilson had an outburst on a fellow passenger who was in the restroom when she wanted to use the restroom.
However, when they returned to their seat; the pair continued exchanging threatening gestures before they were calmed by the flight attendants. On reaching the airport, she was met with the state police and she was charged with second-degree breach of peace. Wilson posted $1000 bail ahead of her show at Mohegan Sun Casino.
The country music star was scheduled to appear in Enfield Superior Court; nevertheless, her case was shifted to next month. Surprisingly, this is not the first time Wilson has been faced with such issues at the airport. Recall, in October 2007, the pop star was issued an in-flight citation while on a trip from Nashville to Los Angeles.
