Ted Ginn Jr. is an American football wide receiver and return specialist for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. Ginn played college football at Ohio State before being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Other teams he has played for in his over a decade pro career include the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers.

The wideout was born Theodore Ginn Jr in Cleveland, Ohio on April 12, 1985. He was diagnosed with a learning disability in the eighth grade; one he was able to overcome with the help of tutors and went on to excel in his studies. While he was a student in Glenville High School, his father was school’s football and track teams coach which enabled him to excel in both sports as a two-star athlete.
Career
Ginn was a versatile player; he played as a defensive back, quarterback, and wide receiver in his high school team. As a defensive back, he was named the USA Today Defensive Player of the Year (2003), Parade All-American (2003) as well as the 2004 SuperPrep National Defensive Player of the Year. Following his senior season, he took part in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as a member of the East team and was named the Most Valuable Player of the game, winning the Pete Dawkins Trophy in turn.
He was also the national champion in the 110-meter high hurdles in his junior year and as a senior, he recorded the best time in the nation and won the state title for the second consecutive year. Following an impressive high school career, college came calling.
Initially, Ginn was recruited by the Ohio State University track coach to run track, with the hope that he could qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, with the Olympics still some years ahead, his track career was put on hold so that he can focus on football. The college then recruited him as a defensive back though he would later play as a wide receiver. Ginn majored in human development and family science in academics.
Through his collegiate career, he set the Big Ten Conference with four punt returns for touchdowns (TDs) in his freshman year, set a school record with a TD on a pass, run, punt return and kickoff return in a single season as a sophomore and in his junior year, Ginn earned second-team All-American and All-Big 10 honors as well as finished as the team’s top receiver with 59 receptions for 781 yards.
Furthermore, he started 31 of 37 games with 125 receptions for 1,943 yards and 15 TDs. He also rushed for 213 yards and 3 TDs as well as returned 64 punts for 900 yards (the second highest total in the team’s history) plus 6 TDs (which set a Big Ten record for most career punt return TDs) and 38 kickoffs for 1,012 yards and 2 TDs. Ted Ginn Jr was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft as the ninth overall before the former quarterback whom many thought would be the Dolphins choice considering their need of a quarterback then although they would later pick John Beck in the second round. However, following his selection, he signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins.
In his debut game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he recorded the longest punt return in franchise history with his first career touchdown return as well as set a career high with four receptions for 52 yards which earned him the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week. He became a starter in his second season. Although his third career season started on a slow note with only 2 receptions in his first game, Ginn had his breakout game therein, setting a career-high 11 receptions for 108 yards. In spite of the so-so season wherein, he was also demoted to the bench, he became one of only 10 players in NFL history to record two kickoff returns for TDs in a single game.
Following the 2009 season, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2010 Draft, Nolan Carroll. He re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year deal in 2012 and joined them in the Super Bowl XLVII, which was his first Super Bowl appearance.
On to the next phase, he signed a 1-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. With them, he recorded one of his best career seasons by posting a career-high 5 TDs along with 556 receiving yards. He would return for a second spell with the Panthers after a one-year stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014. In his second stint with the Panthers, his efforts as a receiver and return specialist helped them reach the Super Bowl 50. As a nod to his versatility, he played as a wide receiver and return specialist throughout the 2016 season and was also their leading punt and kick returner.
Following an impactful career with the Panthers, Ted Ginn Jr signed a three-year, $11 million deal with the Black and Gold team, New Orleans Saints where he stepped up on his play with throwing him the balls. With a combination of speed and elusiveness added to his versatility, he has developed into a playmaker on offense and one of the top deep threats in the league.
