Renowned as one of the top running backs in the league, Shane Vereen was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2011 in the second round. In his four seasons with the Patriots, he had 14 touchdowns—seven rushing and seven receiving—from 1,996 all-purpose yards and helped the team win Super Bowl XLIX.
The American football running back then signed with the New York Giants prior to the 2015 season but now plays for the New Orleans Saints. Prior to his pro career, he played his collegiate career at the University of California.

Born Shane Patrick-Henry Vereen on March 2, 1989, in Santa Clarita, California, Vereen is the first of two children born to Venita Taylor-Vereen and Henry Vereen. His younger brother, Brock played safety at the University of Minnesota and also plays in the NFL. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Bears in 2014.
Talk about the athleticism of the brothers, the chip is never far away from the block neither does the fruit fall far from its tree. They got it from their folks who were both student-athletes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While their mother played tennis, their father was a wide receiver and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the ninth round of the 1979 draft although he would later continue to play his pro career in the Canadian Football League for the Vancouver based BC Lions.
Shane attended Valencia High School where he was a star athlete in three sports. He played a three-year varsity football, played basketball and put in top speed on the tracks. As one of the Southland’s top sprinters, Vereen held the fastest 100-meter time record of any junior in Southern California during the 2006 track and field season; 10.6 seconds for 100-meter dash and 21.5 seconds for the 200-meter dash.
He finished his high school gridiron career with over 6,000 yards and 89 touchdowns and graduated with a 4.0-grade point average. Following an explosive career, he was recruited to play for the University of California, Berkley’s Golden Bears.
Shane Vereen started 19 out of the 38 games over the course of his collegiate career and recorded 556 carries for 2,834 yards and 29 touchdowns along with 674 yards and six touchdowns on 74 receptions. He graduated in December 2010 with a degree in Media Studies after which he decided to forgo his senior season to declare for the NFL Draft.
NFL Career
Following his declaration for the NFL draft, Vereen was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round (56th overall) of the 2011 Draft. A few months later, in August precisely, he inked a four-year deal with the Patriots. He went on to prove his form as a credible pick within a short while with his first career touchdown scored on a four-yard run in 34-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in November. He ended his rookie season with 57 rushing yards and a touchdown.
During the 2012 season, he recorded a catch that would become the longest catch of his career so far on November 22, 2012. He caught an 83-yard touchdown reception in a 49–19 rout of the New York Jets. Shane finished the season with 251 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, 149 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown and was a big part of the Patriots’ 2012 playoff win against Houston Texans where he scored two TD’s and had 5 receptions for 83 yards along with a touchdown on 7 rushes for 41 yards.
The running back was limited to only 8 games in the 2013 season following a forearm injury in the regular season opener. That notwithstanding, he set career highs with 47 receptions for 427 yards and three touchdowns to go with 208 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown. The following season, he recorded 391 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 447 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns.
During the Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, Vereen caught a game-high 11 passes for 64 yards in the Patriots victory over the Seattle Seahawks for his first Super Bowl championship ring.
After a four-year explosive spell with the Patriots’, he moved on to the New York Giants after he signed a deal with them on March 10, 2015. He finished his first season with the Giants’ with 260 rushing yards, 495 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns. The running back had a limited playing time in the 2016 season due to injury.
In the injury-beset season, he finished with 158 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and 94 receiving yards. For the first time in his career in 2017, Shane Vereen ended a season without a touchdown though he had 164 rushing yards and 253 receiving yards. He signed with the New Orleans Saints on July 18, 2018.
