Her father Paul Margulies was an author, a scholar, and an advertising professional. Both of her parents were Jewish descendants of European immigrants. The family lived in Isreal for a while but they returned to the US before Julianna was born.

She had her early education at Green Meadow Waldorf School located in Rockland County, New York. For high school, Julianna attended High Mowing School located in Wilton, New Hampshire. She obtained her B.A. degree in liberal arts at New York’s Sarah Lawrence College where she featured in numerous stage plays.
