Thomas was born Isaiah Jamar Thomas. He was given the name Thomas after a former famous Detroit Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas. His father, James was a parts inspector for Boeing and a great basketball fan. In fact, Thomas was named so, after James lost a bet with a friend during the 1989 NBA finals when he agreed to name his son after Detroit guard Isiah Thomas if the Pistons beat his favourite club, the Laker. Eventually, the Pistons swept Los Angeles, and the rest is history.
