Yancy Victoria Butler was born on July 2, 1970, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan; her parents are Joe Butler and Leslie Vega. In 1985, she attended the prominent HB Studios in New York, after which she learnt dancing and ballet. In 1991, she got her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College.
She made her film debut as a child actress back in 1979, when she played the role of a little girl in the film Savage Weekend. After leaving college, she scored a role in Law and Order and her outstanding performance made Dick Wolf, the creator/producer of the series offer her the lead role in his then upcoming work Mann and Machine in 1992. But sadly after, the series was canceled after nine episodes despite the fact it had an impressive number of followers. In 1993, she played the role of Natasha Binder, a damsel in distress in the movie Hard Target. Her character in South Beach (1993) was that of a thief and con artist. Her other films in the ’90s include The Hit List (1993), Drop Zone (1994), Let It Be (1995), Ravager (1997), The Ex (1997), and so many others.
In the year 2000, she earned a great deal of recognition when she played the role of Detective Sara Pezzini in an action super-hero film Witchblade. The series was cancelled after the second season, with a total of 23 episodes. The series was such a hit, and her performance was incredible as it earned her a Saturn Award for Best Actress in a TV Series in the year 2002. Her other movies and series are: Wolvesbayne (2008), Kick Ass (2010) where she played the character of Angie D’Amico, Lake Placid (2010), Shark Week (2012), and so many others.
