Drew Brees’ Bio

Drew Christopher Brees was born in Austin, Texas, in the United States on January 15, 1979. He was born from the lineage of Athletic stars, his father played basketball for Texas A&M Aggie’s Men’s Team while his mother was an all-state champion in sports during high school. His uncle Marty Akins was an All-Southwest Conference quarterback in 1975 while his paternal grandfather Ray Akins was an all-time great coach in Texas High School football history. He has a younger brother named Reid Brees and they were raised by their father Eugene Wilson Brees II who is a prominent lawyer and their mother Mina Ruth Akins who is also an attorney.

At the age of seven, his parents got divorced and were granted equal custody of their two children. This made Drew and his brother share their time in both parents’ homes. They also have a half-sister named Audrey from their father’s remarriage. He attended Westlake High School in Austin Texas where he featured in basketball as well as baseball.

During his high school, Drew led his school club to finish top in the regular season and also win a state championship. After his graduation, he enrolled at Purdue University in 1997 where he obtained a degree in Industrial Management and there he was a quarterback for Purdue’s team called Boilermakers. He emerged two-time Heisman finalist which catapulted his team to participate in Big Ten Championship as well as the Rose Bowl in 2000. Following his outstanding performance, he was honored with the Maxwell Award for being the nation’s top collegiate player and he won the National Football Foundation Scholarship as well as the Academic All-American Player of the Year Award.

Professional Career

After his graduation from Purdue in 2000, Drew started his professional career in 2001 when he was drafted by San Diego Chargers. He made his first appearance against Kansas City Chiefs in November 2001. He earned a spot as a full-time starter with the club in 2002 and subsequently, in 2004, he led the team to the playoffs. In 2005, he left San Diego Chargers following the end of his career and later signed up with New Orleans Saints in a six-year contract for $60 million in 2006. His move to New Orleans was faced with some difficulties as the City was still undergoing recovery from the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

He led the Saints to a winning Super Bowl XLIV in 2009 and he was also awarded the most valuable player of the tournament. He set a new NFL record of completing 5,476 passing yards in 2011 and in 2012; his contract was renewed with another five-year contract deal for $100 million, the highest contract ever signed in NFL. Also, in 2018, the elite quarterback penned another $50 million two-year contract with $27 million guaranteed with the Saints.

Scar

A closer look at the New Orleans Saints Star Drew Brees, you would notice a scar on his face. The scar which is very obvious and is often used to make fun of the superstar is actually a birthmark. It’s quite unusual to see a celebrity having such a big scar on his face. Time without number a lot of people including Oprah Winfrey at the very first encounter with Brees had thought it was a lipstick smudge and tried wiping it off.

When he was a child people often made fun of him for being different and called him all sorts of names which he considered hurtful. Right now, he has garnered fame and also has the choice of either removing the scar or using it to pass a message. Brees never considered a plastic surgery despite having the needed resources to get it done. He rather sees the birthmark as a mark of uniqueness and as something that makes him special in his own way.

Additionally, for those anticipating if he would remove it or not, Drew says as long as there are no health issues associated with it, it stays right there. The Star has been using the scar as a medium to show the world that being different is good and won’t hold you back from achieving greatness, it would rather help you get there.
