The multi-talented actress was born in Baracoa, Cuba on May 26, 1972. She was raised in Bronx, New York City. After she completed her High school, she enrolled in the University where she studied arts and after graduation, she started her acting career.

Prior to her graduation, Selenis participated in several off-Broadway productions and made her television debut in 1999 when she landed a role in the reality TV series titled Law & Order. She also made her movie debut when she was featured in the movie titled Debutante in 2000.

The talented actress has featured in several movies including Maria Full of Grace in 2004, Sex and the City 2 in 2010, Man in the Mirror in 2011, and Living with the Dead in 2014. She also starred alongside in the courtroom drama titled Custody in 2016 and 2017 movie titled Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Selenis got her breakthrough after she joined the Netflix crew and has been a prominent figure in the production’s comedy-drama series titled Orange is the New Black from 2013 to present. She has also starred in other television series including Law & Order since 1999, The Sopranos in 2006, New Amsterdam in 2008, The Good Wife in 2010, Blue Bloods from 2011 to 2012, Girls in 2012, Elementary in 2012, and Madam Secretary in 2015.

Following her brilliant role in the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black; the brilliant actress bagged an ALMA Award for Outstanding Special Achievement in Television in 2014 and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016.

Selenis Leyva has a younger sister named Marizol Leyva. While they were growing up, Marizol had issues blending with other children and this gave Selenis a great concern. The boys would always force her to play football with them so she could act more masculine but she wasn’t getting along with them. When Marizol was sixteen years old, she opened up that she was gay but that was not all.

When she was nineteen years old, Marizol started her transgender procedure and in June 2015, she came out publicly as a transgender. Selenis has always supported LGBT community and when she discovered her sister was a transgender, she never failed to give her the support that she needed.

The transition wasn’t an easy moment for Marizol, she passed through depression, rejection, and hate before she was accepted for who she is. Marizol is currently a transgender Latina model, a cook, and human rights activist.

Apparently, Leyva is not married yet and is not in any known relationship at the moment. She has a daughter named Alina Leyva who is believed to have been adopted.
