Cate Blanchett is a renowned Australian actress, theatre director, producer and UN ambassador. She began her career in Australian theatre before moving on to the big screen. She is most widely recognized for her award-winning work in such films as, Elizabeth, The Aviator, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Catherine Élise Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne, to an American father and an Australian mother. Cate is of English descent, with a remote French and Scottish ancestry. She has 2 siblings, an older brother Bob and a younger sister Genevieve.
Cate’s father Robert DeWitt Blanchett Jr. was a United States Navy petty officer. After retiring, he also worked as an advertising executive. He died in 1979 when Cate was only 10. Her mother June Blanchett (née Gamble), worked as a teacher and a property developer.
Blanchett was raised in the suburb of Eaglemont, part of the Greater Melbourne area. Her early education was at Ivanhoe East Primary School. She began her secondary education at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and completed it at Methodist Ladies’ College. She developed a passion for performing arts while in secondary school.
She graduated from Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992. Upon graduation, she joined the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Caryl Churchill’s “Top Girls”. She starred as Vivian in her debut movie Police Rescue: The Movie released in 1994.
