One of the most memorable and painful days in 2016 was arguably the day a blooming star, Christina Grimmie was suddenly sent to the world beyond in an apparent homicide.
At 22, Christina had already touched a lot of hearts and achieved a lot in her short-lived career. She was an was an American actress, singer, songwriter, and YouTube sensation that goes by the name – ‘zeldaxlove64’ on the video sharing platform. Her activities on YoutTube which included posting covers of popular songs helped her shoot to fame and she became even more popular when she showed her vocal prowess after she took part in the NBC singing competition The Voice.

She was born Christina Victoria Grimmie on March 12, 1994, to Tina, a receptionist and Albert who worked at Verizon Communications as of 2014. Christina attended Bethel Baptist Christian School, Marlton Middle School, and Cherokee High School in Marlton, New Jersey. However, she was homeschooled for her junior year in 2010.
Her singing talent was discovered by her father when she was six years old and at age ten, she was already playing the piano. Prior to her death, Christina was an animal rights activist and participated in fundraising events for the Humane Society of the United States. Thus, The Christina Grimmie Animal Medical Fund was created in her honour.
Her passion for all things entertainment led her to create her YouTube channel at the age of 15. The channel served as a platform through which she released her works to the audience. Her debut video on the channel was a cover of Don’t Wanna Be Torn, a popular track by Hannah Montana. She gradually worked her way to stardom and in four years, she had two million viewers.
Singing Career
As a singer, Christina released her first extended play, Find Me in 2011. Debuting at #35 on the US Billboard 200 and #2 on iTunes, the EP was a success, bringing her to even more fame. She signed with Creative Artists Agency in 2012 and released her only studio album With Love in August 2013. Before her tragic death, Christina emerged as 2nd Runner-up on popular singing competition The Voice in 2016. She also dabbled into acting, starring in a 2016 independent romantic comedy The Matchbreaker.

Christina was born to Tina and Albert Grimmie and was of Italian and Romanian descent. Her mother, Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer, an issue that weighed Christina down before she was killed. She also had an older brother Marcus who served as her road manager during her performances. Marcus was present when the singer’s life was taken by an armed, obsessed fan.
Christina was born in a Christian home and her family attended Fellowship Alliance Chapel in Medford before they moved to Los Angeles.
Who Was Christina Grimmie’s Boyfriend?
While they never made a public announcement about it, fans came to the conclusion that the late singer was dating Stephen Rezza. This follows some loved-up social media snaps of the two together. Her killer is presumed to have seen a picture of the 22-year-old singer with her boyfriend and it sparked rage and hate in him. Notably, he was overly obsessed with her and tried hard to get her attention to no avail.
Stephen Rezza, also a Singer and Producer with Jim Henson studios was devastated about Grimmie’s unexpected death.
Cause Of Christina Grimmie’s Death
Amid global chaos and senseless killings around the world, the Orlando Police Department broke the saddest news on its Twitter account saying “With deep regret, we have confirmed Christina Grimmie, @TheRealGrimmie, has died from her injuries.” The singer was shot three times by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl on 10th June 2016. The tragic incident took place while she was signing autographs following her performance with Before You Exit at The Plaza Live in Orlando. She was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center in a critical condition. Early the next day, she was declared dead.
Since Loibl fatally shot himself after being tackled by Grimmie’s brother Marcus, the police could not interrogate him to ascertain his reason for attacking the singer. Notwithstanding, it was assumed that Loibi’s extreme obsession with Christina Grimmie may have inspired him to take her life since he wasn’t getting any attention from her.
