Denise Nicholas is an American actress-cum-civil right activist. She started her acting profession in the year 1968 with an episode of It Takes a Thief. After featuring in Room 222 in the year 1968-1974, she featured as one of the casts in NBC/CBS’ In The Heat Of The Night, playing the character of Harriet DeLong. She was actually the person who wrote the six episodes of the series. Furthermore, after her involvement in TV Shows, Denise Nicholas ventured into writing.
In order to improve her writing dexterity, she attended a Professional Writing Program at the University of California. Eventually, she gained access to the Journeymen’s Writing Workshop under the tutoring of author Janet Fitch. Denise was lucky to have worked with Fitch for five years. The sexy diva was also an attendee at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers Workshop, and the Natalie Goldberg Workshop situated in Taos, Mexico.

Denise Nicholas was born on July 12, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. When she was 16 years of age, she featured on the cover of Jet Magazine as a future school teacher prospect at the National High School Institute at North Western University. She graduated from Milan high school in the year 1961.
Denise Nicholas enrolled into Michigan University as a Pre-Law student. Moving on, during her schooling days at Michigan, she changed her major to Latin-American politics, English, and Spanish. Afterward, she later left Michigan University for Tulane University, where she concentrated in Fine Arts. Apparently, Denise Nicholas debuted in a Spanish-language play presented by her language class. She left college on time so she could join the Free Southern Theatre (FST), during the period of Civil Right Movement.
Finally, after exhausting a couple of years touring the deep South with the FST, Nicholas embarked on a journey to New York and was made one of the members of the Negro Ensemble Company, performing all over Louisiana and Mississippi. Nicholas was made to act as Liz McIntyre, the Guidance Counselor on the popular ABC series Room 222. The screen goddess clinched her Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of Southern California.
Her Novel – Freshwater Road
The novel Freshwater Road happens to be her foremost publication by Agate Publishing in August 2005. It earned a starred review in Publishers Weekly and clinched a nomination as one of the best books of 2005 by The Detroit Free Press, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Washington Post, Newsday, and The Chicago Tribune. The novel received an award from Zora Neal Hurston/Richard Wright for her 2006 debut fiction. Freshwater Road was later reprinted by Pocket Books. More so, Nicholas was assigned by Brown University to script a staged adaptation of the novel which was to be presented in May 2008.
