Cody Kessler was born on the 11th of May, 1993, in Bakersfield, California to Christie and Don Kessler. He attended Centennial High School where he was named California Gatorade Football Player of the Year after throwing for 2,831 yards and 36 touchdowns. After participating in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, he went on to enroll at the University of Southern California (USC).

Kessler was redshirted in his first year at USC, after which he was named as a backup to . By his second year, he was named starting quarterback for the Trojans, and led them to a 10–4 record. In the 2013 Las Vegas Bowl, he was named the Most Valuable Player after completing 22 of 30 passes for 345 yards with 4 touchdowns. For the whole season, he completed 236 of his 361 passes for 2,968 yards, with 20 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.

His third season was as similarly impressive with the previous one as he completed 315 of 452 passes for 3,826 yards with 39 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. the highlight of the campaign was the six touchdowns he threw against rivals Notre Dame. He was the first quarterback to manage as much touchdown throws against the Fighting Irish in its 127-year history.
