Jill Ireland was an English actress best known for her roles in Star Trek, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, The Ghost Train Murder, The Great Escape and Twice Around The Daffodils. Jill was also known for her numerous roles in movies with Charles Branson who was her second husband.

She died on the 18th of May 1990 after a battle with breast cancer but she will be remembered for the roles she played in movies and television series like Three Men In A Boat, There’s Always Thursday, The Desperate Man, Shane, The Mechanic, Breakout and Breakheart Pass.

Jill Ireland took up acting professionally in the mid-1950s by appearing in small roles in films and television before moving on to appear in supporting and recurring roles. Her career flourished and not only did she have a movie made about her called Reason For Living: The Jill Ireland Story, but she also received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Jill Ireland’s first marriage was to the actor, David McCallum in a 1957 wedding. The duo met on the set of the movie titled Hell Divers earlier that same year and they later made an appearance as a couple in a total of 5 episodes of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The celebrity couple called it quits in 1967 but they already had three sons – Valentine, Paul, and Jason, who was an adopted child. Unfortunately, Jason lost the battle against drug addiction and died in 1989 from a drug overdose after all the efforts by his mum to rehabilitate him. Jill wrote a book titled Life Line which chronicled her struggle to help her son overcome his addiction.

She met her second husband actor Charles Bronson through her first spouse David; both men were co-stars on the set of The Great Escape in 1963. Jill Ireland and Charles Bronson later got married in 1968. Going forward, Jill was constantly making on-screen appearances with her husband. The duo appeared in no less than fifteen films together; if that isn’t proof of how strong their bond was, I don’t know what is. The best of their joint efforts as a couple are evident in films like From Noon Till Three and Hard Times.

Jill Ireland and Charles Bronson had a biological daughter called Zuleika Bronson, who was born on the 4th of August 1971. They later adopted another daughter known as Katrina. Jill remained married to Bronson till her death in 1990.

In 1984, Jill Ireland was diagnosed with breast cancer leading to her having a mastectomy which earned her the admiration of fans and friends who revered her for exhibiting great courage. Her experience with the dreaded disease made her write a couple of books, recounting her struggles with cancer. Notable among her publications is Life Wish which she published in 1987.

 

Jill Ireland later became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society leading to her testifying before the Congress of the United States about the cost of medical treatment. This earned her an American Cancer Society’s Courage Award which was bestowed on her by the then president of the United States, Ronald Regan.

On the 18th of May 1990, the famed actress passed on at her Malibu California home as a result of complications from breast cancer. She was already working on her third book as at the time of her demise. Her body was cremated, and her ashes were buried at the Brownsville Cemetery with her second husband, Bronson when he passed away.
