When RMS Titanic hit the waters more than a hundred years ago, it was seen as something that was literally impossible to sink. Unfortunately, it would be sunk by an iceberg, going down with more than 1500 lives into the history book as one of the worst marine disasters ever. Since then, there have been attempts at developing something that will replace the first giant ship, something that would even be bigger. One of such is the Titanic Replica ship which is set to hit the waters soon.

Also referred to as Titanic II, the ship is being built in China, something that has been criticized by many because while the original ship was a cruise ship, China is a country that is known more for cargos rather than cruise ships. Beyond the different opinions held, the ship has already turned in amazing numbers. Here’s a look:

A Look at Titanic Replica Ship By The Numbers

1. Years of Construction: More than 4 years

Currently being built by the Chinese company, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd, the ship was laid down in 2016, and it is expected to launch in 2022. This means that it could take anywhere between 4 to 6 years for work to be finished on the magnificent ship.

This is in contrast to the original Titanic which only took two years for it to be completed, running from 1909 to 1911 and then it made its first sail which also happened to be the last in 1912. It survived for only five days on the water, 10 to 15 April 1912 before it finally sank 3 hours after hitting the iceberg.

2. Size of Titanic Replica Ship

The Titanic Replica ship seeks to recreate the original ship not only in looks but in everything else including the shape and size. With that, it will have a length of 882 feet 9 inches (269.1 m) and a height of 175 feet (53.3 m). The depth will be 64 feet 6 inches (19.7 m), the draught will be 34 feet 7 inches (10.5 m), and then it will have 9 decks from A to G.

What most people find rather troubling is that apart from trying to have the exact replica of the ship, Wuchang also wants to recreate the scene of the tragic event including a simulation of hitting the infamous iceberg.

3. How much will it cost? – Anything from $161 million to $500 million

In today’s money, the $7.5 million that was spent in the creation of Titanic by White Star Line is estimated to be somewhere around $180 million. The replica, on the other hand, is gulping anywhere up to $500 million which is significantly more. Work on the project was interrupted at various points because of the issues of finances relating to royalty that need to be paid.

Why the project is taking so much is because apart from the issues of royalty, it will feature the best in terms of modern-day technology. Hence, even though everything is looking to be similar to what was obtained in the original piece, this is still featuring modern technology to give the best in comfort as much as possible. But then, one thing it will not have is internet connectivity.

4. Number of people to be on the ship: Over 3000

The Titanic Replica ship will have more than 3000 people on board. While passengers will be 2400, the crew will have 900 members, which adds up at 3300. This is also very close to the RMS which had slightly more or fewer people based on different sources. There are sources that claimed the doomed ship had 3327 people as against the 3547 that is believed by other sources.

With the 3,300 people, it will sail from Dubai to Southampton, England. And then from there, it will follow the path of the main ship and sail to New York through the Atlantic; it is on this path that it will re-enact the sinking of the first ship. After the first voyage, it will also move to other places that are yet to be disclosed.

How Much Is a Ticket for Titanic Replica Ship?

Going back to the times of the first ship, passengers got to pay between $15 and $40 for a ticket. In today’s money, this is between $350 and $900. For those on first-class tickets, they spent as high as £870.

As regards the prices for the ticket of the replica, it has still not been announced but as anyone can expect, it will be expensive.
