Sampson was probably the most coveted collegiate basketball prospect of his generation, having graced the cover of Sports Illustrated six times in less than four years. The Houston Rockets selected him first in the NBA draft in 1983. He averaged 21.0 points and 11.1 rebounds as a rookie, appearing in the NBA All-Star Game and winning the Rookie of the Year Award. He was dealt to the Sacramento Kings for Jim Petersen after averaging 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds with Golden State in 1988–89. Sampson’s injury problems persisted in Sacramento, where he played in only 51 games over two seasons. After being released by the Kings, Sampson joined the Washington Bullets for a 10-game stay in 1991–92 before being waived. In ten NBA seasons, he appeared in 441 games, just more than half of the 820 planned.

During the 1991–92 season, Sampson appeared in eight games for Unicaja Ronda in the Spanish League. During the 1994–95 season, he also played with the Rockford Lightning of the Continental Basketball Association before retiring for good. In Richmond, Virginia, he also assisted a minor league professional squad. Sampson was honored by the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
