Put Amelie Lens and techno music in the same room and whatever you get in result is bound to be explosive. Amelie Lens has established herself as arguably the hottest property in the genre of electronic music. The Belgian has a massive worldwide following and is almost always booked for shows all over North America and Europe with overpacked crowds and rapturous applause. Her rapid rise has brought both praise and envy from fans and elite DJs who were there before her.

Since she caught the bug of electronic music as a teen, the music DJ cum record producer has never looked back. Lens has put out over five EPs and owns her own record label. She has also collaborated with her partner and manager (Sam) in the past for an entrepreneurial venture. All this was before she decided to focus on her music full time.

Amelie Lens Biography

Born on May 31, 1990, in Vilvoorde, Belgium, Lens has always had an eclectic taste in music. Growing up, she listened to the likes of Boys Noize, Nine Inch Nails, Ellen Allien, Underworld, and a lot of others.

She used to love to go for music tours and festivals but in 2006 – at the age of 15 – she attended one that set the course for the rest of her life. This happened at the 2006 Dour Festival in Belgium. She had wandered into one of the tents where techno music was blaring. As the sound of the music washed over her, she recalls, she fell in love with the genre. Amelie spent the rest of her teenage years traveling to techno music shows across the country.

Before Amelie Lens decided to pursue a career as a DJ, she worked some odd jobs, including cleaning toilets. She was then scouted by a modeling agency and went on to model for various fashion brands and elite fashion photographers like Tim Walker, Levi’s, Harrods, and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Towards the end of her time as a model, she took her DJing craft seriously and started learning harder and performing in smaller local gigs, she even started making soundtracks for fashion shows. Lens found a way to create a schedule that allowed her modeling and DJ work to co-exist.

At the time, she and her boyfriend Sam lived in a three-story house they had purchased in Antwerp from where they ran an oatmeal company, Baerbar. The building’s other floors also doubled as their music studio and apartment.

During this period, Amelie Lens was signed by Italian record company Lyase and they worked together to produce her first studio release, Exhale. Subsequently, she joined the Pan-Pot label for her second EP and began to play at larger events.

It had become too difficult to juggle her responsibilities as a business owner, model, and DJ, so she quit every other thing to focus on her music career in 2016. This decision ushered in a period of staggeringly rapid growth in her career and saw her begin to tour more internationally and develop an addictive fan base that showered her with praises and gifts wherever she went.

As of March 2019, the Belgian DJ had released six EPs, including 2017’s ultra-successful Contradiction EP and 2019’s Basiel EP, produced under Lenske Records, a label which she co-owns.

Her family

Much isn’t known about Amelie Lens’ family except for her grandmother who she grew up with. Amelie was born and raised by her mother, Renee, who was single. Tragedy struck when Amelie was just five years old: her mother who was just 32 at the time suddenly had a heart attack and passed away.

As a result, little Amelie spent the next six years been bundled from the house of one aunt to the other, finally ending up with her grandmother at the age of 11. As a result of her mother’s death, Amelie became afraid of having children of her own, as she was worried that they might go through the same thing she did. But it also made her realize that life was temporary and gave her the extra motivation to make something out of every second that life gives her.

1. Lens’ constant late nights due to concerts she was attending as a teenager were a huge source of worry for her grandmother.

2. The modeling agency that scouted her met her in the same festival and on the same day that she had fallen in love with techno music.

3. She met her boyfriend, partner, and manager Sam at a club on the night of her 18th birthday. The two made a connection over their common love for electronic music and he was her first tutor as concerns DJing and music production.

4. Amelie Lens has DJed under different names including her mother’s name – Renee.

5. In September 2016, she fainted just before the start of one of her gigs with Pan-Pot. This was when she quit her work as a model as well as the business she was running with Sam.
