Murillo was born and raised in his country home in Lake Forest, California. He was born to his parents, Michael Murillo and Vera Murillo. André, born on May 18, 1990, was raised together with his sister, Michelle. The basketballer started and completed his high school education at El Toro High School in 2008. He was excellent in his two varsity seasons at El Toro and received recognition as Team MVP and the Sea View League MVP. He was also involved with the school’s football team.

After high school, he attended Concordia University where he played the 2008/2009 season. Subsequently, he enrolled at Biola University, graduating with a degree in Biblical studies. He also played there and was recognized as an NAIA All-American.

Weeks before graduating from Biola, he signed his first professional contract with the Hamburg Towers, an elite basketball team in the German ProA league.
