Andrew W.K. began his musical career in the mid-1990s, playing in a variety of local bands before traveling to New York, where he released his first recordings under the Andrew W.K. alias before joining the band Slam, subsequently known as Reverse Polarity, in 1993 at the age of 14. In 1996, W.K. recorded “Mr. Surprise,” which was included on “Plant the Flower Seeds,” and in 1998, he traveled from Michigan to New York City, where he worked as a bubblegum machine salesperson, an opera ticket salesman, and a fashion photographer, among other occupations.

Then he stopped the AAB project and began recording new solo work under his full “Andrew Wilkes-Krier” name; Hanson Records released “Room to Breathe,” a cassette-only single, later that year.
