In 2018, having exited at the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the French Open, Kerber advanced to the final of the Wimbledon championships where she is set for a showdown with serial champion .

Angelique Kerber was born on January 18, 1988, in Bremen, Germany. Her mother Beata (née Rzeźnik) is originally Polish while her father Sławomir Kerber is an ethnic German from Poznań, Poland. She has raised in the northern German city of Kiel, alongside one sibling, a sister named Jessica. Kerber started playing tennis at a very tender age and her mother served as her manager during her junior career. She progressed to the latter stages of several events both in Germany and all around Europe, however, she didn’t clinch any junior title until 2003, at a time she had already made her professional debut.

Angelique Kerber made her Grand Slam debut in 2007, however, she was met with an early exit at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. She continued on a steady rise over the following years, winning several ITP titles, however, the WTA titles continued to elude her. 2012 can be described as Kerber’s breakthrough year as she won her first 2 WTA titles; the 2012 Open GDF Suez and the 2012 e-Boks Open. She equally scored her first victory against Serena Williams at the 2012 Western & Southern Open, putting an end to the latter’s 198-match winning streak. However, Kerber eventually lost to Li Na at the final of the tournament.
