Bio (Age)

Edward Michael Bear Grylls was born in Donaghadee located in County Down, in Northern Ireland on June 7, 1974. He was partly raised in Donaghadee before his family moved to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.

Bear attended Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eaton College. After his graduation, he enrolled at the University of West England where he studied Spanish and German Languages. He further went to University of London, Birkbeck, where he obtained a part-time degree in Hispanic studies. He graduated with a 2.2 grade in 2002.

Career

Bear served in the British Army from 1994 – 1997. He was trained in winter warfare, unarmed combat, survival, climbing, parachuting, explosives, and desert warfare. After his training, he was posted to North Africa twice as a survival instructor. However, his career ended in the army as a result of an accident he encountered in Kenya when his parachute refused to open. The incident caused a spinal injury which led him to undergo rehabilitation in order to recover.

Furthermore, after his recovery, Bear Grylls who once dreamt of climbing Mount Everest was able to make this dream a reality. On May 16, 1998, the young adventurer became one of the youngest climbers to have achieved this remarkable feat and placed his name in the Guinness Book of Records.

Bear has carried out several expeditions ever since he started his adventure career. In a bid to raise money for the Lifeboat Institution in 2000, Bear led a team to circumnavigate the British Isles on jet Skis completing it in about 30 days. A few years later, he led another team of five to cross the North Atlantic Ocean using a rigid inflatable boat.

In 2007, Grylls alongside Alan Veal the leader of the Royal navy Freefall Parachute Display Team and Davide Hempleman-Adams a mountaineer, set a new world record after they organized the highest open-air formal dinner party using a hot-air balloon at 25,000 feet above sea level.

Bear has carried out other expeditions including the Paramotoring over the Himalayas in 2007, Journey to Antarctica in 2008, Longest Indoor Freefall in 2008 and Northwest Passage Expedition in 2010.

Asides from his expeditions, Bear also hosts a television series titled Born Survivor: Bear Grylls which was later changed to Man Vs Wild. The show is highly educative and it features various stunts performed by Grylls in a bid to teach people how to survive whenever you find yourself in unfavorable places. The series has recorded huge success and has placed Bear as a prominent figure internationally. It airs on British channel 4 as well as other Discovery Channels in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Additionally, Grylls has written several books including Facing Up The Kid Who Climbed Everest, Facing the Frozen Ocean and Born Survivor: Bear Grylls. Bear’s father Sir Michael Grylls is a conservative politician and he also worked with the Royal Yacht Squadron while his mother Sara Lady Grylls is the daughter of a notable politician and businesswoman Patricia Ford. He has an elder sister named Lara Fawcett who is an interior design public relations agent as well as a tennis coach. Lara gave Edward the name ‘Bear’ when he was just one week old.

Is He Dead?

Being in an adventure is quite risky and this has left many of Grylls’s fans speculating if he is dead or alive. Well, sorry to shock you but the great adventurer is very much alive. Though he has passed through life-threatening situations ranging from when he sustained a spinal injury from a fall from 16000 feet above the sea level to suffering dehydration and blinding migraine 26,000 feet atop Everest. He almost drowned in 2009 during the filming of Born Survivor in the Sumatra Jungle.

Similarly, while shooting a video for Man Vs Wild, Grylls placed himself in yet another dangerous situation of survival in the snowy mountain Yukon in Canada. Out of the countless times this superstar has encountered life-threatening situations, he has always made it in the end. Previously, Grylls pulled a stunt using his youngest child Jesse in August 2015. While on Saint Tudwai’s Island along the North Wales coast, the adventurer left his youngest son while a tide was approaching so he could be rescued by the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution). After the rescue, Bear was faulted for using a little child for the stunt.

Despite his adventurous nature, Bear and his wife have been living together happily with their children. His family has been very supportive and there is no sign or news of divorce yet for the power couple.

House

In 2015, Bear Grylls acquired a super luxury mansion at the Battersea Power Station site. The historical house was a 100-year-old former lighthouse keeper’s cottage which is about 2,000 feet long and about 650 feet wide, now turned into a world-class icon. He purchased the house for about $8 million.

Prior to the purchase, Grylls and his family lived in a houseboat with a canoe, hammock, and outdoor bath on the river Thames. They also spend time on the island off the coast of Wales.
