Biography

Blaise Matuidi was born as one of five children to Elise and Faria Rivelino on April 9, 1987, in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne, France. The family later moved and raised their children in Fontenay-sous-Bois, a suburb in Paris, where their son fell in love with football, watching the likes of Jay Jay Okocha at PSG.

He attended Victor Duruy School where he stood out as the best footballer among his peers. This prompted his parents to enroll him at the local youth team, US Fontenay-sous-Bois, at just the young age of six. He spent five years with the club before moving to CO Vincennois, located in the Parisian suburb of Vincennes. Matuidi showed signs of being the great player that he is today and subsequently earned a spot at the prestigious Clairefontaine academy where he received further training while also playing for his team.

In 2001, Matuidi signed his first semi-professional contract at Creteil after leaving CO Vincennois. He continued his growth as a player in the team’s youth setup while further attracting interests from big clubs like Lyon and Troyes. To the surprise of everyone, Matuidi opted to join Troyes rather than the two-time defending champions after four years with Creteil.

Blaise Matuidi played for the club’s reserve team in France’s fifth division but was however twice called up to play for the senior team in two Ligue 2 fixtures. After a year with the reserves, Matuidi was promoted to the senior team who had gained promotion to the top division and went on to appear in 31 league matches.

Following an impressive personal campaign by the footballer, Troyes offered him a professional contract and he signed a four-year deal with the club. He went on to appear in 35 matches the next season, scoring three goals along the way. That, however, did not help the teams fortunes as they were relegated that season. Matuidi himself gained plaudits from all across France and was well sort after.

In July 2007, he left Troyes and joined Saint-Etienne where he was quickly inserted into the first team and helped his side secure a UEFA Cup position. He played with the side until the summer of 2011 when he moved to the club he supported as a child, Paris Saint-Germain F.C (PSG).

With PSG, Balise Matuidi enjoyed huge success, winning three consecutive league titles by 2015. In 2016, he helped his side secure a second domestic treble of trophies; Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Coupe de la Ligue. After six years with the club, he joined Italian champions Juventus for a transfer fee of around €20 million.

Having played for the French international youth teams, Blaise Matuidi went on to represent his country of birth at the senior level, so far making over 70 appearances and scoring nine goals. The player, who has been hailed for his energy, physical strength, mobility, and tenacity, was part of the impressive 23-man French squad in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Family and Parents of Blaise Matuidi
