Danner began her acting career on stage, appearing in several Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. She won a Theatre World Award for her performance in the Broadway play The Miser (1969). In 1970, she clinched the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her work in the play Butterflies Are Free (1969–72).
