Brett Brown is an elite American professional basketball coach, plying his skills with the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. His journey from South Portland to the world’s top level of basketball include a standout collegiate career at Boston University, an extensive coaching career in Australia, and as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.

Brett Brown’s Bio

Brett William Brown, the Sixers head coach was born in South Portland, Maine on the 16th day of February 1961 to Bob and Bonny Brown. He attended South Portland High School where his father was the head coach.

During his high school career, he was named first-team all-state guard in 1978 and 1979 and also led his team to a 27–0 record as well as a State Class A Title in his senior year. Following his high school career, Brown played four seasons at Boston University with the Boston Terriers under Rick Pitino. There, he carried on with his star athleticism, receiving several mentions and awards in turn. He was named the Lou Cohen MVP as a sophomore and served as the team captain in both his junior and senior seasons.

Although he was a standout player, he did not envision a career in the court but rather behind the scene as a coach. He never went pro but rather got a gig as a graduate assistant coach under coach John Kuester before moving to Australia.

Career

To set his coaching career in motion, he received a job offer as Melbourne Tigers assistant coach until 1993 when he became head coach of the North Melbourne Giants. A year later, he led the Giants to a championship victory and was named NBL coach of the year. After five explosive years with the Giants, he was introduced to the NBA as an unpaid intern with the San Antonio Spurs in 1998-1999.

He moved on to the Australian side once again to coach the Sydney Kings from 2000 to 2002 and was also a major part of the Australian national team. Brown was the assistant coach between 1995 and 2003, including both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games as well as the 1998 World Championships and from 2009 to 2012, as the head coach wherein he led the team to the 2012 Olympics.

He rejoined the Spurs as the team’s director of player development and eventually as an assistant coach in 2007 to . He created a consistently strong bench by focusing his attention on the team’s lesser-known players as well as playing a major role in signing one of his Australian national team players, star guard Brett Brown also earned four championship rings with the Spurs.

Having served under the tutelage of storied coaches such as Rick Pitino, Lindsay Gaze, Gregg Popovich, and, of course, his father, he was set to blaze the trail as the Philadelphia 76ers 24th coach. In August 2013, he became the head coach of the Sixers who offered him a 4-year guaranteed contract. He inherited a team in “total rebuilding mode” but would later be lauded for his upbeat persistence during an unprecedented rebuilding scheme.

In the second half of the 2013-2014 season, the Sixers tied the record for longest NBA losing streak after losing 26 games in a row. Despite that, Brown committed to building his players with his collaborative skills, work ethics, self-analysis and essential sense of humour, with one of them, point guard winning the season’s NBA Rookie of the Year.

The 76ers signed Brett Brown to a contract extension in December 2015 and another extension in May 2018. He was also named the interim President of Basketball Operations for the team on June 7, 2018.

The Sixers head coach is a real chip off the old block. Not only did he come from an athletically inclined family but also went on to replicate and even doubling the successes his antecedents made.

His father, Bob Brown, coached for 52 years – mainly in high schools, but also in college including Boston University, Saint Anselm College and the University of Southern Maine before his retirement in 2012. Bob is also a member of five halls of fame. Father and son represent a coaching lineage unmatched in Maine annals and are both inductees to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.

Brett Brown met and married his wife Anna (born in September 1967) in Melbourne, Australia. The duo has been married for over two decades and has two daughters, Julia and Laura, and a son, Sam. They reside in Voorhees, New Jersey.
