With a 10-year professional basketball career behind him, veteran NBA center Brook Lopez joined the Milwaukee Bucks in July 2018. A first round 2008 draftee, the NBA star spent the greater portion of his long-running career with the Brooklyn Nets where he consistently delivered some impressive stats and among other highlights was named for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. Lopez also had a one-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers which ended after the 2017-18 season.

Brook Lopez Bio, Age

Brook Robert Lopez was born in North Hollywood, Los Angeles on April 1, 1988, just one minute earlier than his identical twin, Robin. His family later moved to Fresno, California where he spent most of his childhood and adolescence. Robert schooled at San Joaquin Memorial High School and he was a member of the school’s basketball team alongside his twin brother. Among other highlights of their high school career, the talented duo both featured in the 2006 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game.

In 2005, Lopez and his twin both committed to play college basketball at Stanford University. He averaged 12.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game over 26 total appearances in his first season with the Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball team, a performance which earned him an All-Pac-10 Freshman Team selection. The talented player had an even better sophomore season during which he averaged 19.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.1 blocks per game and was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team and the All-American Third Team.

Lopez declared for the NBA Draft in March 2008, giving up his final 2 years of collegiate eligibility. He was selected by the then-New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets) as the 10th overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

Lopez earned regular playing time during his first season with the New Jersey Nets featuring in all 82 games and finishing the season with 13.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. He earned an All-Rookie first team selection and finished third in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting.

Lopez retained his role as the Nets’ No.1 center as he featured in all 82 regular season games in each of the two seasons that followed his rookie season. His individual performance equally improved over the two seasons even though the team’s overall performance waned.

The NBA star’s smooth run with the Nets got derailed when he incurred an injury prior to the 2011–2012 regular season. He missed the first 32 games of the season before returning to action on February 19, 2012. He incurred yet another injury after only 5 appearances which had him sidelined for the rest of the season.

Lopez returned in top form for the 2012-13 season after signing a 4-year contract extension with the Brooklyn Nets in July 2012. He featured in 79 games and finished the season with 19.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and a career-high 2.1 blocks per game. The talented player was named for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game as a replacement for point guard  who was out with an injury.

Lopez’s 2013-14 season was shortened by an injury, however, he returned in top form the season after that. He signed a 3-year contract extension with the Nets in July 2015 and was billed to remain with the team till 2018. He remained in top form throughout his long stint with the Nets until June 2017 when he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a multi-player deal. The NBA vet’s one-season stint with the Lakers was rather unfavorable as his scoring average dipped to 13.0 points per game. He joined the Milwaukee Bucks in July 2018.

Brook Lopez was ranked among the top 100 World’s Highest-Paid Athletes of 2018 by Forbes magazine, having amassed as much as $23.1 million in the period under review. This sum is even expected to get higher, thanks to Lopez’s one year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks which will have him receive a $3,382,000 salary for the 2018-19 season.

 

Parents, Brother

Brook Lopez was raised by his mother Deborah Ledford who worked as a high school Mathematics teacher. Ledford was a competitive swimmer in her prime and just like her son, she attended Stanford University. His father, Heriberto Lopez is known to be a Cuban native. There is not much information known about him as he is estranged from the family.

In addition to his twin brother Robin, Brook Lopez also has two older brothers, Chris and Alex. Brook’s basketball career has been very much similar to that of his twin brother as the duo played together right from childhood up till their college career. They also entered the NBA Draft together in 2008, were both picked in the first round and they also play in the same center position.

Robin Lopez played for the Phoenix Suns, the New Orleans Hornets, the Portland Trail Blazers and the New York Knicks before joining the Chicago Bulls in 2016. Just like his famous younger brothers, Alex Lopez played college basketball at the University of Washington after which he played professionally in Asia and Europe.
