Carel Struycken is not among those actors who have acted in many films even though he began his career since the 1970s. However, he is among the ones you never get to forget because of his distinctive features, especially his height and the roles he always takes. With more than 4 decades of acting under his belt, Struycken has over 40 movies and TV appearances to his name including Twin Peaks and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Carel Struycken Biography & Age

Struycken was born on 30 July 1948 in The Hague, Netherlands. He was raised there until the age of 4 when his family left for Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles.

When he was 15 and living on the island of Curaçao, the actor got involved in music and so, he composed some Carribean waltzes. According to him, he hopes to add some more music and come up with an album sometime in the near future.

By the time he was 16, he moved back to his home country where he continued with his education. After high school, he proceeded to a film school in Amsterdam where he studied directing program.

When he graduated from the film school, he moved to the United States, Los Angeles, where he attended the American Film Institute.

After he moved to the states in 1975, he soon found himself working on several projects with Rene Daalder, including a musical feature. It was at that time that he was spotted by Mabel Collins who was the personal assistant to the director of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. She told him they needed him on the project which went on to become his first acting professional acting role in 1978.

The next film that came his way was Die Laughing in 1980 followed by Go West, Young Man in the same year. Carel Struycken appeared in other movies before appearing on one of his most important of them all, The Addams Family as Lurch in 1991. He played the role in the film’s sequels Addams Family Values (1993) and Addams Family Reunion (1998).

With many more movies to his name, his most recent are Another Brick in the Wall (2016) and Gerald’s Game (2017). He has also appeared in a number of TV series such as St. Elsewhere (1988), Twin Peaks (1990 to 1991), and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 to 1992), and most recently, he was in Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).

The actor is married to an American woman whose name is not known. Nonetheless, their union has been blessed with two children. Struycken and his family now live in the US where he now refers to as home.

This is as a result of a rare hormonal disorder, Acromegaly that he has. The disorder is caused by a non-cancerous tumour which secretes excessive growth hormone. What this means is that one may experience enlargement of the face, hands, and feet.

According to the actor, he got his massive height from his mother’s side of the family. While his grandfather was as tall as 6.8 feet, most other members of the family were taller than 6 feet. On his part, he was already 6.5 feet when he was 14.
