Carolyn Choa was born in Hong Kong, China. She was raised in Hong Kong, where she attended Hull University and the London Contemporary Dance School. She began attending Carol Bateman’s School of Ballet at Helena when she was five years old. Then she fell in love with dancing from the moment she came onto the stage as a grasshopper. The show was made at the English National Opera in London in 2005. It then went to the Lithuanian National Opera (2006).

Carolyn has worked on several films, including The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and The English Patient (2001). (1996). She also appeared in the British detective drama television series Inspector Morse (1987), based on Colin Dexter’s novels.

She produced The Wisdom of Crocodiles and translated several Chinese films for Miramax, including Hero, The Promise, Curse of the Golden Flower, The Banquet, and Let the Bullets Fly. This is her first book, The Vintage Book of Contemporary Chinese Fiction.

Muna Tseng Dance Projects (The Place, Riverside Studios, Purcell Room, Athens), numerous seasons at the ROH and ENO, and the Princess in The Soldier’s Tale. Her work has included workshops for the University of the Arts and ENO Opera Works in 2010 and 2011.

In Spring 2014, she co-led a Dao De Jing discourse at the Meridian Chinese Studies School in London. The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (Spring 2015) and an original opera are now in development in HK.

Carolyn was nominated for the Asian Women of Achievement awards in 2009 and shared the Olivier award for exceptional achievement to opera with Anthony Minghella. Her choreography for ‘Parsifal’ won the French Critics’ Claude Rostland Award for Best Production in 2012.
