Rising from the platform her actor father and singer mother laid for her, star actress, writer, and humorist Carrie Fisher had garnered for herself a degree of reputation in the world of acting with her appearance as Princess Leia in the George Lucas’s blockbuster Star Wars released in 1977, raising her stardom beyond imaginations.

Carrie Fisher Biography

Born on October 21, 1956, the American actress, writer, and humorist Carrie Fisher used her wit, talent, and experiences to entertain audiences both in the movies and on her social media pages. She was born in Burbank, California and was popularly known as the daughter to actors and singers Eddie Fisher and . Making her first appearance at the age of 15 in the Broadway show Irene, starring alongside her mother, Fisher made her film debut in Shampoo 1975. But it was her snappy witticism in the Star Wars film which was worth $1.1 billion in terms of its total lifetime gross earnings, that further announced her acting skills and further opened the door for more appearances in the film’s sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). Other films she featured in the late 1980s and early 1990s include Hannah and Her Sisters, the Australian film The Time Guardian, When Harry Met SallyThe ‘Burbs, and the fantasy comedy film Drop Dead Fred, among many others.

Within this period also, Fisher made some publications including her semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge which was published in 1987. Three years later, she published novels Surrender the Pink and Delusions of Grandma (published in 1993). In 1990, Columbia Pictures released a film version of her first novel Postcards from the Edge, and she did uncredited script work for movies like Lethal Weapon 3, Outbreak, The Wedding Singer, and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

Her autobiographical book Wishful Drinking was published in 2008 and the following year, the book’s audio earned her a nomination for a 2009 Grammy Award in the Best Spoken Word Album category. She was selected as a member of the main competition jury at the 2013 Venice Film Festival and by 2017, her appearance on Catastrophe earned her a  Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series nomination. Her last movie role, however, was Star Wars: The Last Jedi which reportedly earned over $314.4 million.

Carrie Fisher’s Net Worth

With all her movie appearances and write-ups, some fans will quickly assume that Carrie, with her unique action figures, would probably be worth a fortune. However, reports from varying sources show that the star actress had a smaller net worth compared to other Hollywood stars her level. She was said to be worth just $5 million before her death.

Carrie had such little amount as net worth as a result of a bad marketing deal in her teens. The star lost out on millions in her teens when she signed away her likeness as part of the Star Wars franchise. This meant that she made no money from the merchandise of the Star Wars which was over $1.5 billion in gross profit. Meanwhile, her appearances in The Blues Brothers (1980), which boasts $57 million in gross profits, and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), which has brought in about $40 million awarded her some huge amount of money.

Her semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards From the Edge, which was turned into a film in the 1990s, gathered more than $7 million on its opening weekend and a gross of $39 million. But all these monies went to both her health issues and to charity. Carrie was passionate about animal rescue and about helping people lost to drug abuse. This gave her a Golden Heart Award from The Midnight Mission, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles that works to offer a bridge to self-sufficiency for homeless people through counselling, education, training and job placement. Though she was left with a meagre amount in her account, the star actress and writer will always be remembered for her good heart.
