The qualities that best describe Left-handed MLB Player Chase Utley may sound exaggerated but they are all true. As a Professional second baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, he is fast, a great ball hitter, and he never falls short at working hard and long to improve himself.

In his fifteen seasons in the MLB, Chase has won the All-Star six times, the World series once with several other honors and accolades which has graced his career.

Bio/Early Career

Utley was born in Pasadena, California on the 17th of December 1978 but was raised in Long Beach both in the United State of America. His parents are David (a lawyer) and Terrel Utley. He has a younger sister named Taylor Ann, who is seven years younger than him.

Growing up Chase had two hobbies – playing baseball and skateboarding. His dad was particularly interested and supportive of his son’s love for baseball and felt it was a hobby that could be developed but for skateboarding, he felt it is something Chase will drop with time and that was exactly how it turned out. His ability to hit with his left hand, Chase credits to his father who encouraged him and saw to it that he developed his skills in the game of baseball.

Chase attended Long Beach Polytechnic high school, where he played with the school’s baseball team. With every game he played, he improved and got better; according to his high school coach, Chase was the fastest hand he ever saw in his many years as a high school coach.

As a senior, he hit over .500, struck out twice in 80-at-bats and recorded fourteen homers. His hitting ability got him so much attention that the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted him in the 2nd round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft but he turned down the offer for a scholarship offer at the University of California Los Angeles.

While in college, Chase Utley played for the UCLA Bruins leading them to the NCAA Super Regionals and was selected to the was selected to the All-Pac-10 team. While still attending UCLA, Chase played for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Utley also played for a couple of the Phillies’ farm system teams like the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons of the Class AAA International League, and the Clearwater Phillies of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. In 2001, he was selected to the All-Star Futures Game and in 2003, he made it to the International League post-season all-star team.

Professional Career

Chase Utley made his professional major league debut on April 4, 2003, for the Philadelphia Phillies as a pinch hitter in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was moved back to the minors on April 30 but was recalled in August to take Plácido Polanco’s job at the at second base. At the end of the season, he batted an average of .239 in forty-three games.

In 2005, the Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America selected Chase as the co-recipient of the 2005 Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award. The following year, he became part of the baseball team that represented the U.S at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. In July of the same year, he was named National League player of the month.

In 2007, he signed a seven-year contract worth $85million to continue with the Phillies, however his performance that season was marred by an injury on his metacarpal bone which kept him out of the game for some time, coming back from the injury he helped his team get back to their winning ways by clinching the National League East Division title.

In 2009, he was number 6 position on Sporting News list of the greatest current players in baseball. Chase Utley continued with the Phillies until August when he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for John Richy and Darnell Sweeney. He has renewed his contract with the team twice since then; in February 2017, he signed a $2 million one-year deal with the team and in February 2018, he re-signed for two years. Utley has, however, announced his intention to retire from playing professional baseball after the 2018 season.

The MLB player is considered to be one the best baseball players of his generation and during the course his career which has spanned well over a decade he signed several contracts which have increased his bank account. His latest contract is a $2 million deal he signed with the Dodgers in February 2018, thus, his base salary as of 2018 is $2 million.

The MLB star is married to a beautiful and adorable lady, Jennifer Utley. The couple met at University of California Los Angeles. After dating for a couple of years, they got married in 2007. They reside in Sausalito, California, during offseasons and are proud parents to two wonderful boys – Benjamin and Maxwell Utley.
