Her family moved to California in 1952 and she continues her education at Alhambra High School. While there, she posed for a swimsuit ad which appeared in Seventeen magazine. This was how her modeling career began. She went off to California State University to study English but dropped out to pursue a career in modeling full time.

Her big break came when the editors at Glamour came upon her swimsuit and invited her for a shoot with the famous photographer Ali MacGraw.
