Age, Early Life, and Rise to Fame

Clive James Standen was born in a British Army base in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, on July 22, 1981, to a British Army officer and his wife but grew up in Leicestershire, East Midlands in England. Long before he nursed the dream of becoming an actor, he fuelled the passion of combat sports, subsequently training and competing on different levels.

Standen attended King Edward VII School, Melton Mowbray and later took a performing arts course at Melton Mowbray College. From the age of 11, he practiced Muay Thai daily and even traveled to Thailand at 16 to train. He also trained in stunts, stage combat, horse riding, sword fighting, and worked in a professional stunt team in Nottingham. By his late teens, he was a former international Muay Thai boxer and Fencing gold medalist. His experiences in martial arts, stunts, as well as the contemporary dance classes he took in college, would later pay off along the course of his later career.

In time, he was enamored by acting and decided to seek a career therein. He joined both the National Youth Theatre and the National Youth Music Theatre and performed in productions at many well-known venues. Afterward, he earned a place on the 3-year diploma course in Acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His theatrical credits include The Invention of Love (2006), West Side Story (2000) and The Ballad of Salmon Pavey (1999–2000).

Eventually, his professional career took off in 2004; he debuted on the television with Walking the Dead and on the big screen in Ten Days to D-Day. The following years, Clive scored minor roles in numerous works including Doctors, Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Zero Hour, the British sci-fi Doctor Who where he portrayed Private Carl Harris, Heroes and Villians, and a supporting role in the 2007 Bollywood film Namastey London. He played the brother of the titular character Robin Hood, in the BBC TV series Robin Hood and was cast in the main role as the famous Sir Gawain in the TV series, Camelot in 2010.

His other credits include the 2012 Vertigo Films’ feature film, Hammer of the Gods, Atlantis, the lead role in Vikings as Rollo, Bryan Mills in the television adaption of ‘s thriller of the same title – Taken, Everest, Patient Zero, and In Like Flynn. Besides his roles on screens, Clive Standen has also done voice-overs for video games such as Aliens vs. Predator and Inversion.

Clive Standen Family, Wife and Children

Standen married the wife of his youth, Francesca. He feels lucky to find the woman of his dreams at an early age, and since he held onto her, he has not looked back. For the couple who were married in 2007 at Babington House, happily ever after is a reality.

Before the duo eventually tied the knots, the proposal from Clive Standen was a dreamy land tale. On that fateful day, the actor dressed as his then girlfriend’s favorite celebrity, Elvis Presley and sang the song, Fools Rush In. While she was still in the ecstasy of the moment, he popped the question. There may not be a huge ring then but he made sure every moment of it was big.

They have been married for over a decade, but to them, it feels just like yesterday. Clive still cooks for his wife during the weekend and utilizes every opportunity he has off work to spend time with his family. They live in London with their three children; two sons, Hayden (2003) and Rafferty (2011) and a daughter, Edie (2007).
