Collin McHugh’s Biography

Collins was born in Naperville, Illinois on the 19th of June 1987 as Collin Alexander McHugh. His parents, Scott and Teresa McHugh raised him in Naperville before relocating to Atlanta when he was seven years old.

Scott and Teresa started a nondenominational church in Alpharetta, Georgia. He attended Providence Christian Academy from his sixth grade which was the same school his mom worked as the head receptionist. McHugh started playing baseball back in his days at Providence Christian Academy but since he couldn’t play baseball in his high school, he played football instead.

Collin McHugh watched baseball games a lot with his family, especially his father while growing up and so he considers Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Greg Maddux, who were pitchers for the Braves as his major influencers in the game of baseball.

MLB Career Profile

He kicked off his professional career in 2008 after the New York Mets drafted him out of  Berry College in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Draft of that year. Collins struggled in the New York’s system until August 2012 when he got a call to make his MLB debut in a game against the Rockies at Citi Field. In the game, he threw 7 scoreless innings, struck out 9 and allowed 2 hits and a walk.

Despite his performance, the team still lost the game and McHugh was demoted and replaced with Jeremy Hefner. The following year, he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for outfielder Eric Young, Jr. and he was designated for assignment in December 2013. In that same month, the Houston Astros claimed him off waivers.

He made his debut with the team in 2014 and ended the season with eleven wins and recording a 2.73 mark to lead the team in ERA. In 2015, he finished second in the American League with nineteen wins behind Dallas Keuchel who recorded twenty wins. The next year (2016), he recorded a career-high of thirty-three starts, finishing with an ERA of 4.34 in 184 23 innings.

Collin McHugh would miss some games during the 2017 season due to injuries and was limited to just twelve starts. He played just two games during the postseason, recording a combined total of 6 innings, with a total of one hit and 3 runs. In that same year, the Astros won the World Series, for the first time in the history of the franchise.

In 2018, he made a transition to a relief role. He appearing in fifty-eight games that season and ended with an ERA of 1.99 in 72 13 innings and ninety-four strikeouts.

Wife, Family

The Houston Astros pitcher has been married to wife Ashley Buzzy since 2009. Ashley and Collins met when they were seniors in high school but began dating almost two years after their graduation. After dating for a couple of years, the lovebirds decided to walk down the aisle in 2009 at the age of twenty-two.

Just like her husband, Ashley was not born in Atlanta, Georgia; her family only moved over there when she was much younger. She is actually a native of Denver, Colorado. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in graphic design with special emphasis on Fabric and Textiles.

Ashley runs her own business, Ashley Buzzy Lettering, and Press – a calligraphy, print, and graphics company located in Atlanta, Georgia which works on weddings and events items like invitations and menus.
