Courtney Lee is a professional basketball star who plies his trade with the New York Knicks of the NBA. He joined the Knicks in 2016 as an 8-year veteran in the NBA, having turned professional back in 2008. He was selected by the Orlando Magic in the 2008 NBA Draft following an illustrious college career at Western Kentucky University.

Courtney Lee was born on October 3, 1985, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents are Teer Butler and Anthony Lee Sr. Growing up, his father was mainly absent, thus, he was raised by his single mother alongside 2 siblings.

He schooled at Pike High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Among other highlights of his high school career, he was part of the school’s team that won the Indiana 4A state championship in 2003. He also won multiple state championships with the Indy Hornet’s AAU team. By the end of his high school career, Lee was considered a 3-star recruit and also ranked as the No. 34 shooting guard in the nation for the class of 2004. He was recruited to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers men’s basketball team by coach William Small, the team’s assistant coach at the time.

In his freshman season, Lee created a new school record for total scoring by compiling 461 points in 31 appearances. After his record-setting first season, the talented youngster continued in top form throughout his entire college career as he received First Team All-Sun Belt Conference designations from his sophomore season to his senior season (2005–06, 2006–07, 2007–08). In addition, he led the team to a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and also won the Sun Belt Player of the Year Award in his senior season. In the 128 total appearances of his 4-year college career, Courtney Lee totalled 3,957 minutes overall, achieved 82% of free throws, made 245 three-point shots, had 242 steals, 281 assists and 78 blocked shots.

Career Stats

Courtney Lee was selected by the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft as the 22nd overall pick. In his rookie season, he made 77 total appearances, averaging 8.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1 steal per game. In June 2009, he was traded alongside Rafer Alston and Tony Battie to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson.

In his only season with the New Jersey Nets (2009–10), Courtney Lee recorded career-highs of 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals. He equally led the Nets in the total number of steals (93), three-point shots (76) and free throw percentage (86.9%). Despite his impressive form, he was traded to the Houston Rockets in August 2010 in a multi-team multi-player deal.

During the 2010-11 season with the Rockets, Lee averaged 8.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. The following season, his scoring average was upped to 11.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. After 2 seasons with the Rockets, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in July 2012.

Courtney Lee, however, did not fare so good during his 2-year stint with the Boston Celtics. His scoring average dipped to 7.8 points and 2.4 rebounds during his first season (2012-13) with the team. The NBA star earned less playing time in the following season and his scoring average dropped further to career-low of 7.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. At the end of the 2013-14 season, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a multi-way deal.

Courtney Lee averaged 11.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in his first season with the Grizzlies. The following season, he finished with 10.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He recorded a scoring average of 10.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in his last season (2015–16) with the Grizzlies. In February 2016, he was traded midseason to the Charlotte Hornets where he spent the remainder of the 2015-16 season. He started in all 28 appearances with the Hornets, averaging 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Lee got signed by the New York Knicks as a free agent in July 2016. In his first season with the team, he averaged 10.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was named a co-captain of the team before the start of the 2017-18 season and he finished the season with a scoring average of 12 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Upon joining the New York Knicks in July 2016, Courtney Lee penned a 4-year contract valued at $48,003,340 with an average annual salary of $12,000,835. His base salary for the 2018-19 season is pegged at $12,253,780 and this sum will be upped to $12,759,670 for the 2019-20 season, the last year of the contract.

From all indications, the NBA star has never been married in his life. Though his relationship status is unclear, Lee is known to have a child.
