Despite the few off the court problems and injuries D’Angelo Russell might have had in his so far very short NBA career, the point guard when on his game can be as lethal as any other person on the court. Russell was born D’Angelo Dante Russell to Keisha Rowe and Antonio Russell on the 23rd of February 1996 in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended Central High School in his hometown for a year before later transferring to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. At Montverde, Russell built a solid partnership with future NBA player as their team won back to back High School National Tournament championships.

D’Angelo Russell was recruited by a number of high profile college programs including the University of North Carolina, Michigan State, and Louisville. The player, however, opted to attend Ohio State University to play for the Buckeyes. In his first college year, Russell kept up his performances for the team, becoming the first freshman to record a triple-double. He went on to average 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.6 steals in 35 games, earning him the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award as well as Consensus All-American First-Team and first-team All-Big Ten honors.

The star player was further awarded the 2015 Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wayman Tisdale Award, and Jerry West Award before he announced he was forgoing his remaining college years to enter the 2015 NBA Draft.

With the second overall pick, the Los Angeles Lakers drafted D’Angelo Russell and signed him to a rookie scale contract. He was a part of the ‘s plan to rebuild the team and Russell showed all the signs of him becoming the next big thing for the LakeShow. His performances in the first half of the season earned him a participation in the Rising Stars Challenge and by the end of the season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

On the 26th of October 2016, Russell kicked off his second season by scoring 20 points against the Houston Rockets. He kept up his performance until he injured his left knee on the 23rd of November and had to receive a Platelet-rich plasma injection that kept him out for two weeks. Russell returned to action on the 11th of December but was about a month later sidelined after an MRI confirmed he suffered a mild MCL sprain in his right knee as well as a right calf strain and had also bruised his bone. He ended up managing to make 63 appearances and averaging 15.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

D’Angelo Russell’s career with the Lakers came to an abrupt end in the offseason after his team announced he was being traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
