He played high school football for San Jacinto High School as a defensive tackle and tight end, and college football at Iowa State University. Here is all you need to know about one of Cowboys’ best men.

David Irving – Brief Bio

Irving was born in Compton, California on the 18th day of August 1993 to Rickey Harris, and Kimberly Irving as David JaRodd Irving. He spent his childhood days in his birth town before his family moved over to San Jacinto where he attended San Jacinto High School and began playing American football.

While in high school, he played both the defensive tackle position, as well as the tight end position and recorded 19 receptions for 298 yards, 76 tackles, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, seven sacks and four touchdowns.

After high school, he accepted a scholarship from Iowa State University, where he played college football, starting off as a defensive end before switching over to the defensive tackle position during his junior year. He was dismissed from the team in 2014 after he was photographed carrying a stop sign and caught on camera helping take down a light pole during a riot that broke out in the school during the VEISHEA festival.

After the photo and video clip surfaced, he was charged with fifth-degree theft, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief in the second degree, and a Class ‘D’ felony and the next day after the riot, the then coach Paul Rhoads announced that Irving had been dismissed from the team for violating the ISU student-athlete code of conduct policy, thus, he missed an entire season.

David Irving finished his college career playing only thirty-two games with eight starts, forty-four tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble, one interception, eight passes and three blocked kicks.

Professional Career

He began his professional career in 2015 signing with Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft ended. In September, he was waived and signed to the practice squad. A few weeks later, Dallas Cowboys signed him from the Chiefs’ practice squad as a replacement to Davon Coleman, who was released from the team. He was used as a backup defensive tackle and before the season ended he recorded 14 quarterback pressures (sixth on the team).

The following season, Irving recorded three forced fumbles, recovering one, a sack, and batted down a pass in a game against Green Bay Packers, the game ended in a 30-16 win and David Irving was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

In 2017, he resigned with the Cowboys. That season, he was suspended from playing the first four games for violating NFL performance-enhancing drugs policy. Irving would later reveal in a press interview that when he received a letter from the NFL alerting him that he had failed a drug test, he was shocked because he only took a substance which according to all the ingredients listed on the bottle, it was supposed to be all natural, but apparently, it had a hidden ingredient.

At the expiration of the suspension, he was moved from the defensive end position to the three-technique defensive tackle position. That same season, he suffered a concussion during the game against the Washington Redskins. The head injury became complicated because of he kept playing with it. The lingering symptoms afterward forced the team to declared him inactive for the rest of the season, thus, he missed the last four games of that season.

The 2018 season also began like the previous one. Following another performance-enhancing drug policy violation, he was banned from playing the first four games of the season. The team also placed him on the reserve/did not report list to start training camp as he deals with his off-field issues.
