Davy Klaassen was born on February 21, 1993 (age 29) in Hilversum, Netherlands. He is a Dutch professional football player. He is a midfielder well-known for his club and national team careers. Since 2014, he has led the Dutch club Ajax and has made appearances for the Dutch national senior squad.

Because of his physical features, Klaassen has earned the moniker “cheese straw” (Dutch: kaasstengel). When Everton signed the former Ajax captain, then-manager Ronald Koeman was cited as stating Klaassen was a leader on the field. Klaassen began his football career in the youth divisions of local amateur team HVV de Zebra’s, where he stayed until 2003 before joining HSV Wasmeer. A year later, he was accepted into the prestigious Ajax Youth Academy. While playing for the Ajax A1 youth team in 2011–12, Klaassen helped his team win the Nike Eredivisie league title, as well as finish runners-up to Inter Milan in the NextGen Series after losing on penalties (5–3) after a 1–1 tie after extra time.

Klaassen made his first-team debut on November 22, 2011, in a UEFA Champions League group stage away draw (0–0) against Olympique Lyonnais, replacing Lorenzo Ebecilio in the 85th minute. He made his Eredivisie debut on November 27th as a substitute against NEC, scoring only 42 seconds after being subbed on.

On August 5, 2013, Klaassen made his debut in the Dutch Eerste Divisie, scoring a goal in a 2–0 win against Telstar while playing for the freshly promoted reserves team Jong Ajax, in what would be the reserves’ first match in the second tier of professional football. Klaassen was chosen as Ajax’s captain for the 2015–16 season, succeeding the departing Niklas Moisander.

Everton: Klaassen signed a five-year contract with Premier League club Everton on June 15, 2017, for a fee of £23.6 million. For the 2017–18 season, he was given the number 20 shirt by his new team. He made his debut for Everton in a 1–0 win over MFK Ruomberok in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

Klaassen signed a four-year contract with Werder Bremen on July 27, 2018, with Everton paying a price of €13.5 million (£12 million).

Return to Ajax: Klaassen returned to Ajax on October 5, 2020, on a deal until June 30, 2024, with a transfer price of up to €14 million.

International Career

Klaassen made his debut for the Dutch national team at the youth level, making his debut for the Netherlands U-16 team on October 28, 2008, in the 10th edition of the Tournoi Val de Marne ’08 in a 3–0 victory over Italy U-16, scoring the second goal for the Netherlands in his first international match. On September 22, 2009, Klaassen made his debut for the Netherlands U17 squad in a friendly match against France U17.

Klaassen made his first-team debut for the Netherlands under head coach Louis van Gaal on March 5, 2014, at the Stade de France in Paris, in a friendly match against France ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He came on in the 72nd minute for Wesley Sneijder as the Netherlands fell to the French 2–0. In a 2–0 friendly win against Spain on March 31, 2015, Klaassen scored his first international goal and the team’s second goal.
