For the first three years of his college career, Deion Jones was a backup linebacker. He started a game for the first time in his senior year but that was enough to get things to fall in place for him. The lad was impressive on his pro day, he had attended many private workouts and team visits and was projected to be a third or fourth round pick in the draft. However, Deion shot himself to a second-round pick following his improved performances in the draft process. What manner of determination could that have been? Not many players have been able to enter the league on such note.
Just what really makes this dude special? Perhaps a look at his bio and family will reveal to you more hitherto unknown things about Debo.
Deion Jones’ Bio
The footballer began life as a tot born on November 4, 1994, in New Orleans, Louisiana where he also grew up with his peers. When it was time for high school, Deion Jones was enrolled as a pupil at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, Louisiana where he quickly subscribed to membership with the Jesuit Bluejays football team playing the position of a middle linebacker.
By the time he wrapped off his high school career, Deion had recorded 179 tackles with 8 sacks and 3 interceptions which helped the Jesuit Bluejays take a shot at the LHSAA Class 5A quarterfinals, but they were however humbled by the boys from Carencro High School.
His impressive high school performance where he was a starter was however good enough to get him ranked 2012 No. 31 outside linebacker by Rivals.com. Deion committed himself to play college football for the Fighting Tigers of Louisiana State University (LSU) after receiving a late offer from them in December 2011.
On arrival at LSU to study Sports Administration and play football, he met an opposite twist of things from high school as he was a backup for his first 3 years with the Fighting Tigers contrary to his three years starter record in high school. In his final year when he finally began to start games, Deion Jones had a total of 100 tackles, 5 sacks and 2 good interceptions, a pick-six, 3 passes defended and one forced fumble.
Jones attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana where he completed most of the drills, the lad was also at LSU’s pro day where he performed excellently which improved his draft stock and profile. Furthermore, Deion attended private workout events and had many team visits to the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and the Indianapolis Colts.
His hard work and efforts paid off as he was picked by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round and 52nd overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Come May 5, 2016, Jones penned down a four-year $4.54 million contract which had with it a signing bonus of $1.50 million and $2.16 million guaranteed.
With “The Dirty Birds” where he had veteran Paul Worrilow to compete against for the starting linebacker position, it turned out that Paul became more of a mentor to Deion rather than a competition, and to this day, he still gives him the credits for the success he had in the cradle of his professional career.
By the end of his rookie season, the Jesuit Bluejays and Fighting Tigers of LSU prodigy had for himself and his team 108 combined tackles with 75 solo, 11 pass deflections, 3 interceptions and 2 touchdowns from 15 games played out of which he started 13.
The New Orleans, Louisiana born footballer with a never-say-die spirit began the 2017 NFL season as a starting middle linebacker following the departure of Paul Worrilow to the Detroit Lions. Deion Jones finished his second professional season with an improved 138 combined tackles with 98 solo, 10 pass deflections, and 3 interceptions.
Family
Deion has as his parents Cal and Tahonas Jones (seated on his left and right in the picture above) and a sister named Cassidy (who he is carrying). His father actually named him Deion after former Atlanta Falcons’ cornerback Deion Sanders.
Perhaps it is for good reasons that this happened when he was born because following his drafting into the National Football League, Deion converted his otherwise devout New Orleans Saints family to fave the Atlanta Falcons. As the rivalry between the Saints and the Falcons rages on elsewhere, it has already been settled in Deion’s family as they are all for the Atlanta Falcons.
