The South American continent is one part of the world that is awash with some of the most talented football players. The name Emiliano Martinez might not yet be one of the household names across the football world but with more hard work and a bit of luck, all that might just change.
The life of a football player is unique but amongst all the positions on the playing field, that of a goalkeeper is fairly unique. While other players are at the peak of their playing powers between the ages of 24 – 30, a goalkeeper hits his peak rather later between 29 – 35. This might give a clearer picture of the career trajectory of Emiliano Martínez.
Emiliano Martínez Bio
Emiliano was born on the 2nd of September 1992 in Mar Del Plata, a southeastern region of Argentina’s Buenos Aires province. His birth name is Damián Emiliano Martínez Romero. Very little is known about his family and childhood. It is however obvious that he started out professional football at Argentine Club, Independiente.
He was a player at the Clubs reserves when news filtered in that the legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was interested in signing him for the London Club. At first, when the name Arsenal was muted, Emiliano Martínez and his representatives thought the interest was from Primera League side Arsenal de Sarandí. In time they realized it was actually the famous English club. The rest they say is history.
He was signed as a 16-year-old in 2009 for £1.2m. It was obvious at the time that this was a deal for the future. A promising young talent spotted who given the right circumstances and guidance, would blossom into an integral member of the first team. His career at Arsenal didn’t start immediately as he was loaned back to Independiente for the next season due to work permit restrictions, in part.
Martinez was loaned to Oxford United and here he had his first taste of English football on 5th May 2012 in their final game of the season. It was a game against Port Vale in League Two, Port Vale won 3–0. Over the course of his time at the Emirates, Emiliano Martinez is yet to cement his place as a first choice and has been behind the likes of Peter Cech, Wojciech Szczęsny, David Ospina, and Bernd Leno.

Loan Spells
For most football players, loans are an important part of their football education and development. Especially for the big clubs, it’s a perfect way to gain first-team experience at a lower level club and improve confidence. Martinez has been loaned out to Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Getafe, and Reading.
Once Conceded Five Goals and Still Won!
If you have followed football keenly you’d known that any team that concedes five goals would lose, almost always. It is safe to say Emiliano Marinez belongs to a small class of goalkeepers who have shipped in five goals in a competitive match and still managed to come out on the winning side.
He was the goalkeeper during Arsenal’s exhilarating 7-5 victory over Reading. Martínez conceded four first-half goals, leaving his team with an almost impossible task in the second half. In fairness to him, he wasn’t the only culprit, Arsenal’s defensive performances on the day rank up there with some of the worst in recent times. But fortunately, the Gunners fought back with a Theo Walcott hat-trick, a Marouane Chamakh brace, and one from Laurent Koscielny to settle the contest in favor of the North London giants.
