Ryan Stiles is an American-Canadian actor, comedian, film producer and director. His long-running career as an entertainer is mainly centred on the genre of improvisational comedy. He is well known for his work on the US and UK adaptations of the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? In 2013, after a 7-year hiatus, Ryan Stiles resumed his duties on Whose Line Is It Anyway? (US) when the show made a return to US television.

The multitalented comedian and actor was born Ryan Lee Stiles on April 22, 1959, in Seattle, Washington. He is the youngest of his parents’ 5 children. His father Sonny Stiles and mother Irene are originally from Canada. At the age of 10, his family relocated back home to Vancouver, in the Canadian province of British Columbia. His mother was a fulltime mom and his father worked as a foreman at a fish processing plant located in Vancouver.

For his high school education, Ryan Stiles studied at R.C. Palmer Junior Secondary School and also at Richmond Senior Secondary in Richmond, British Columbia. As a high schooler, the young Stiles was a fairly excellent student. However, he enjoyed a high level of independence which led him to drop out of school barely a few months to his graduation.

The young Stiles went on to launch his career, performing stand-up comedy at various clubs around his home city of Vancouver. He co-founded the Punchlines Comedy Club alongside Rich Elwood. He went on to serve as the head writer on The Don Harron Show on CTV also doubling as the host of CBC’s Comedy College. He also routinely performed improv comedy with the Vancouver Theatresports League. Stiles later joined the highly acclaimed Second City comedy ensemble and as a member of the group, he performed at the Expo 1986 World’s fair held in Vancouver.

Ryan Stiles got into the international limelight via his work on the British improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Stiles is the most prolific performer the show ever had as he featured in 76 of the total 136 episodes of the show. His regular appearance on the show earned him a massive following in the UK as well as numerous accolades. The talented comedian was also a regular performer on the American sitcom The Drew Carey Show (1995–2004).

When UK’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? came to an end in 1998, ABC went on to produce an American adaptation of the show with Ryan Stiles doubling as executive producer and regular performer. The American version premiered on August 5, 1998, and Stiles appeared in every single episode of the show until its final season in 2006. For his brilliant work on the show, Ryan Stiles received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program in 2002.

After a relatively long hiatus Whose Line Is It Anyway? made a return to US television in the summer of 2013, featuring Ryan Stiles alongside the other members of the original cast. In addition to his role as a regular performer, Stiles is also an executive producer of this most recent revival of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. During the show’s hiatus, the comedian played the recurring role of Dr Herb Melnick on the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men (2004-2015).

The greater part of Ryan Stiles’ TV work has been on the small screen, however, he equally has a number of movie features to his credit. In the early days of his career, Stiles starred in the 1985 Oscar-nominated animated short film Rainbow War. He also appeared in the 1991 comedy film Hot Shots! (1991) as well as the film’s sequel Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993). The talented actor also had brief appearances on the comedy shows Murphy BrownMad About You (1992), Mad TV, and Dharma & Greg (2001). In July 2008, he made a guest appearance as Sergeant Clift on Comedy Central’s TV series Reno 911!

Ryan Stiles is married to Patricia McDonald. The couple met way back in 1981 while Patricia was working as a waitress. They tied the knot in 1988 and their marriage has been relatively blissful ever since. The couple has three children together; sons Sam and Mackenzie and daughter Claire.

The family residence of Ryan Stiles is located on Lake Samish, on the south side of Bellingham, Washington. There, he established a small theatre named Upfront Theatre, committed to the teaching of live improvisational comedy.
