Don was also a professional footballer, he played active football during the 1920s in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Buccaneers team.

On her own part, Julie’s mother Helen Newmar was a Swedish-French woman, working as a fashion designer under the professional name of Chalene but she later diversified into the field of real estate as an investor. Julie has two younger brothers – Peter Bruce Newmar and John A. Newmar. Notable among them is John who is an accomplished writer, winemaker, and epidemiologist.
