Jose Altuve has come from humble beginnings to create a name etched in the history of American baseball. The Houston Astros star who has been named American League MVP, Major League Player of the Year, and MLB All-Star, began his career in 2007 as a free agent with the Astros’ minor league team before gaining major league promotion in 2011, he has remained there to date. The dynamic player is slated to earn an upwards of $20 million annually, thanks to his contract extension with the Astros. This keeps him in the team until the end of the 2024 season at which point there could either be another extension or he might decide to go find his roost with another baseball team. The new contract makes him the highest-paid player on the Astros team, but not the highest paid in the city of Houston. That record goes to the Houston Rockets’ James Harden, whose 4-year deal gives him an average of over $40 million annually in salary dues.

How Did Jose Altuve’s Career Begin?

Hailing from the north-central city of Maracay in the South American country of Venezuela, Jose Altuve got his first professional taste of the world of baseball when he was 16 years old. Encouraged by his father to try out at the Maracay’s Houston Astros camp, Altuve was able to impress the camp board so well he got signed as a free agent with a $15,000 bonus in his contract. This was on March 6, 2007.

He finished the 2007 season in the Venezuelan Summer League with a batting average of .343 before he moved to the US to join the Astros minor league team, the Greeneville Astros. He had a batting average of .284 in 40 games in the 2008 season and .324 with 21 stolen bases in 45 games during the 2009 season. He was honored with an All-Star league team spot, MVP honors, and a promotion to Astros’ Class A Short Season affiliate the Tri-City ValleyCats.
