Gabourey Sidibe is an American actress who is best known for her role in the critically acclaimed inspirational 2009 Lee Daniels movie, Precious. Her performance in the film, which was her first ever silver-screen role, earned her nominations for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

She also starred in the Fox musical drama series Empire, the American Horror Story series, and many other movies.

Gabourey Sidibe’s Biography

Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983, in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York to a Senegalese father, Ibnou Sidibe, and an African-American mother, Alice Tan Ridley. Her father was a cab driver while her mother was a special education teacher who gave up her career to become a street performer/singer. She once appeared on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent. Gabourey has two brothers and a set of twin sisters. Despite having been born in Brooklyn, Gabby, as she was called, grew up in Harlem. Her parents split when she was 12-years-old, prompting her to sometimes live with her aunt as her mother struggled financially.

She attended local colleges such as the Borough of Manhattan Community College where she has an associate’s degree. During this time, she maintained a part-time job as a receptionist and also worked in the phone sex business to help pay her tuition. She went on to pursue a degree in psychology at Mercy College having already attended City College of New York. It was during this time that she was informed by a friend about a film audition being held to find the lead for Precious.

Gabby was already familiar with the role, having repeatedly read the novel the movie was based on. She was, however, reluctant to attend the auditions since it meant she would have to skip college. She was also in the middle of preparations for an exam.

To add to that, Gabby had no previous acting experience to draw on for the audition. Her only bit of acting experience was from school plays as a child. She, however, sought inspiration from her own life experiences along with the knowledge acquired during her psychology training to portray her character in a powerful way.

In one interview she said her childhood gave her “a lot of practice acting,” because she grew up pretending to be okay when she was not.

Gabby beat the over 300 girls who came for the auditions to land the role. After her performance and the movie’s success, everything began to fall into place with offers coming in from every angle. Her next role was that of a bully in the film Yelling to the Sky. Other movies she starred in are Tower Heist, Seven Psychopaths, White Bird in a Blizzard, etc.
