Geoffrey Zakarian’s Biography

Today, Geoffrey Zakarian is a known name in the culinary world. One of the world’s topmost chefs with restaurants across major cities in America but it was a journey that took grit and time.

It all started on the 25th of July, 1959. Geoffrey was born to immigrant parents, an Armenian father, and a Polish mother. They eventually both became American citizens. Geoffrey is not the only child of his beautiful parents. He has two siblings, a sister named Virginia and brother named George.

Education equips us with the tools and skills we need to achieve our life goals. Geoffrey’s education started at Burncoat High School in 1977 before he went on to earn a degree in economics that would help him run multiple successful restaurants at the Worcester State University.

Having examined his interests and passion, Geoffrey Zakarian headed to the Culinary Institute of America in New York to earn an associate degree before heading to France to complete his education as a chef.

While he had the education, his career in the field as a real-life chef cooking for customers started in 1982. He worked as an apprentice chef under chef Daniel Boulud at Le Cirque in France. His apprenticeship ended in 1987.

He returned to the United States and started working in different restaurants. In 1990, Geoffrey’s career as a chef took a monumental leap and he became the executive chef of a restaurant in Manhattan called 44. Geoffrey’s appointment as the executive chef turned out to be a masterstroke. The restaurant received an excellent rating from The New York Times who described the restaurant to be better than it needed to be because of Zakarian.

As a rising star in the food industry, Geoffrey Zakarian’s services were in demand by multiple establishments. He was hired to supervise Old Navy’s coffee bar, and coffee cart division. He also worked at the Blue Door restaurant of the Delano Hotel in Miami. He got another executive chef position at the Patroon, also in Manhattan.

Not to be confined to America, Geoffrey went back to Paris and worked with renowned chef, Alain Passard at the Arpège.

Chefs are considered food creatives, who make art with their taste palettes. Geoffrey Zakarian style can be described as modern with roots in French Cuisine.

His style defined the two restaurants he owned, named Town and Country located in Manhattan. Both restaurants were highly rated with Country particularly earning a Michelin star. Unfortunately, the restaurants were closed down in 2009.

Geoffrey Zakarian currently consults for a restaurant in Atlantic City, Water Club and is an executive chef at the Lamb’s Club in New York. Also, he has committed his wealth of experience into writing and has released a book – Geoffrey Zakarian’s Town/Country. He’s also a television personality having appeared numerous times on shows like Chopped, 24 Hour Restaurant Battle, Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, among others.

Geoffrey Zakarian has been able to maintain a stable family life despite his success and fame. Although he was initially married to Heather Karaman for 10 years, He has been married to Margaret Anne Williams since 2005.

His marriage to Margaret, who is a marketing executive has produced three children – two daughters and one son, George Harris Zakarian. His daughters are named Madeline and Anna Zakarian.
