Groves is a professional boxer who has held a number of titles including the WBA (Super) super-middleweight, Commonwealth super-middleweight, and British super-middleweight among others. George Groves Biography

It was on 26 March 1988 that George Groves was born in England, Hammersmith, West London to the family of Donny and Yvonne Groves from whom according to Donny, the kid got his brains. He was brought up alongside a brother and a sister by their parents; his father was a painter and a decorator. Yvonne on the other hand, used to work for Playboy and at Decca Records before she called it quits when her George who is her eldest child was born.

While growing up, the boxer was not only quite, but likewise shy. But then, his father, who was athletic took him to the Fulham Kickboxing Club which is where he first began as a kickboxer. Thanks to his brilliance and hard work, Groves was already fighting 15-year-olds when he was only 11. By the time he was 15, he had become a British, European, and world junior kick-boxing champion and a black belt martial artist.

Before turning pro in 2008, Groves who is also known as Saint George had a great amateur career that saw him fighting 76 fights and winning a massive 66 with 40 stoppage victories.

Looking at his boxing record, George Groves has come a pretty long way. His first fight was against Kirilas Psonko in 2008 which he won by points. He won the next 5 by technical knockouts and then by unanimous decision and the knockout again before going on to defeat Ghana’s Charles Adamu to win the Commonwealth super-middleweight which became his first title in 2010.

He defended the title in 2010 in a fight against Kenny Anderson and again in 2011 against James DeGale to retain the title and win the British super-middleweight title. Later in the same year, he fought Paul Smith to keep the title before fighting Jamaica’s Glen Johnson in 2012 and still retained the title.

In his 19th fight in May 2013, George Groves defeated Noé González Alcoba to win the vacant WBA Inter-Continental super-middleweight title. However, he lost his next two fights against Carl Froch for WBA (Unified) and IBF super-middleweight titles. In 2014, he beat Christopher Rebrassé to win the European and vacant WBC Silver super-middleweight titles before going on to lose to Badou Jack in a WBC super-middleweight title.

He won the vacant WBA International super-middleweight title in April 2016 against David Brophy. He continued to defend the title until 2018 when he lost it to Callum Smith in a fight that also had The Ring super-middleweight title; World Boxing Super Series: super-middleweight final at stake.
